Purples pound Raiders for 3rd straight district win

Bowling Green had to claw back from a late deficit Monday to pull out a district victory against Warren East.

The Purples made sure there wasn’t any such drama in the second game of the team’s series Tuesday.

BGHS scored at least four runs in each of the first four frames and walloped the Raiders for a 21-0, five-inning road victory Tuesday night.

“Those are really tough games to be a part of and I’ve been on the other end of that too,” Purples coach Matt Myers said. “Coach (Wes) Sanford is a great coach and he’ll have his kids going.

“I thought our kids handled the game very well. We did what we were supposed to do and made the most of our opportunities.”

Bowling Green (10-8 overall, 5-3 District 14) has won three straight district games.

The Purples broke out for a 13-2 road win Thursday at Greenwood, then battled for a 7-6 extra-inning win at home Monday against East. That victory included a BGHS comeback from a 6-2 deficit in the seventh inning.

“I think the last two wins, the way we came back Monday and how we beat Greenwood on Thursday are two things we haven’t done all year,” Myers said. “I thought we were special on Thursday. We really separated ourselves that day. …

“For us to come back (Monday), not too many people can do much when you’re down 6-2 to (Ryan) Hawks and we hadn’t played great. But I felt like our at-bats were good and our kids never gave up. I think those two things can be turning points of the season.

“I think tonight, you take this game and we had some guys that had some good at-bats, but you flush this game. We won and great job with our guys, they handled it good, but there’s not a lot you take out of this.”

Bowling Green chased Warren East starting pitcher Brady Dragoo from the game Tuesday before he could even record an out.

The Purples loaded the bases in the top of the first on an Eli Thurman single, Jay Buser single and Will Garske hit-by-pitch. Dragoo then let loose a wild pitch while facing Joe Howard, allowing Thurman to come home and make it 1-0 BGHS.

Howard quickly made it 4-0. He got a pitch over the middle and launched it over the right field wall to put the Purples up four.

Bowling Green tacked on another run in the first off Raiders reliever Cameron Martin. Evan Spader reached on a bunt single, moved to second when Jackson Haga was hit by a pitch and then scored to make it 5-0 when East booted a groundball off the bat of Ben Ginter.

The Purples added four more runs in the top of the second. Garske doubled home Buser to put BGHS up 6-0.

Bo Morton made it 9-0 with two outs, blooping a single to center off Raiders reliever Caiden Humphrey that scored Garske, Trevor Dennis and Spader, all of whom were running on the pitch.

The Purples kept pouring it on in the top of the third inning, plating six runs to make it 15-0.

Bowling Green’s third-inning runs came on a Garske two-run double, a Howard RBI single, a Carson Kelley sac fly and a two-run Thurman single.

The Purples cracked the 20-run mark by scoring six more on just two hits in the top of the sixth.

Four of the BGHS runs came on bases-loaded walks issued to Jonah Thurman, Charlie Key, Scottie Brown and Kelley. The other two runs came on a Howard RBI single and a Charlie Cummings sac fly.

Warren East (10-12, 6-5) finally kept the Purples scoreless in the fifth inning, but its own offense failed to score a run in that inning or any other in the 21-0 defeat.

Bowling Green will go for a three-game district sweep back at home at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Most games you see like this, the following game is very close,” Myers said. “There’s a prideful program over there and we’ll get their best shot Thursday.”

South Warren 11, Warren Central 1

Warren Central jumped on the board first Tuesday before South Warren scored the next 11 runs, taking an 11-1 victory in five innings.

The Spartans (14-9 overall, 6-2 District 14) kept their place atop the district standings with the neutral-site win at Warren East.

Tuesday marked South’s second straight night recording an 11-1, five-inning win over the Dragons (5-11, 0-8).

Central scored the game’s first run in the top of the second inning. Jordan Miller hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a single and to third on a groundout, then scored on a Skyler Martinez groundout to make it 1-0 Dragons.

The Spartans struck right back in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs off Warren Central pitcher Peyton Eversole.

A Zack Beckner single, AJ Isable hit-by-pitch and Trent Rice bunt single loaded the bases for Caleb Lloyd. He drew a walk to tie the game at 1.

That brought leadoff hitter Clay Noehl to the plate with the bases loaded. He laced a double to left-center field, scoring Isable and Rice. A throwing error on the play allowed Lloyd to come home and make it 4-1 South Warren.

Sam Gage’s sacrifice fly then brought home Noehl to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead.

“It was important because you don’t want to fall behind and give the other team a lot of momentum,” SWHS coach Chris Gage said of his team’s second-inning rally. “You’ve got to grab it right back. It was good to respond pretty quickly.”

The Dragons threatened to mount a rally of their own in the fourth inning. WCHS loaded the bases with no outs on a Jordan Lindsey hit-by-pitch, Miller double and a DC Rigsby hit-by-pitch.

Spartans pitcher Tyler Martin buckled down. He struck Josh Hurt out looking, then induced a 1-2-3 double play groundout from Martinez to end the frame.

“I just relaxed hoping they’d hit into a double play,” the junior Martin said. “I pitched and hoped for the best.”

South Warren put the game away with a four-run bottom of the fourth. The Spartans made it 6-1 on a double steal that allowed Noehl to come home, 7-1 on a Drew Gregory single that scored Sam Gage, 8-1 on an Isable bloop double that scored Gregory and 9-1 on a Dragons error that let Beckner come home.

South triggered the 10-run, fifth-inning mercy rule by crossing two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Those came on a Hunter Evans sacrifice fly that scored Noehl and a Gregory single that brought home Adam Burns. Gregory’s hit made it 11-1 and ended the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Warren Central will host the Spartans at 6 p.m. Thursday in the wrap-up of the team’s three-game district series.
