Lady Patriots hold down GreenwoodThe Greenwood softball team lost for the second time in three games, falling 1-0 at Allen County-Scottsville on Monday. The Lady Gators (10-3) fell 3-2 to Christian County on Friday, before beating Presentation 2-0 on Saturday. Brittany York led Greenwood at the plate with a double. Kathy Church and Tiffany Evans also singled for Greenwoods only other hits. Were going through a little slump right now, Greenwood coach Penny Reece said. Greenwood returns to action tonight versus Warren East as the first game of a District 14 doubleheader at Warren Central. The Lady Dragons play Bowling Green in the second game. Both had outstanding senior seasons, earning several individual honors while leading their respective teams to postseason success. Michael, WKUs senior quarterback, ran up 2,303 yards of total offense last fall, leading the Hilltopper football team to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship. The Louisa native capped off his career by throwing for a personal-best 185 yards and a touchdown in the Hilltoppers 34-14 win over McNeese State in the national championship game. He ended the year ranked second on the Hilltopper season-record list with a 157.11 efficiency rating after completing 100 passes for 1,661 yards, the most by a WKU quarterback since 1987.Even with his success on the field, Michael did not miss a beat in the classroom, graduating from the Hill in December with a degree in civil engineering technology. Noe, the lone senior on the 2002 Sun Belt Conference champion Lady Topper volleyball team, ended her career as the most-decorated setter in the history of the program. The three-year starter ended her playing career as WKUs all-time leader in assists with 5,172, and broke the season record with 1,814 assists in the fall. Silver recognized by conferenceWestern Kentucky softball pitcher Allison Silver was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year after posting a 3-0 record this past week. Silver (13-11) allowed just one earned run over 19 innings of work and fired her second shutout of the year in WKUs 8-0 win over New Mexico State. WKU golf teams still in contentionBoth Western Kentucky golf teams are in contention after solid performances in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Monday at Bluewater Bay Resort in Niceville, Fla. The mens golf team is in sixth place with a 13-over par 301, with four Toppers placed in the top 25. The Lady Toppers are in eighth place after three players fired first-round 83s to tie for 26th place. Senior John Mullendore is tied for 14th place with a two-over par 74 (35-39), while senior Adam Cox sits in a four-way tie for 18th after a three-over par 75. Senior Jared Topmiller and freshman Robby Shaw are one shot back of Cox, tying for 22nd place with an opening-round 76.Seniors Crystal Angela and Jennifer McGill and sophomore Jennifer Taylor led the way for the Lady Toppers with opening-round 83s to tie for 26th place. New Mexico State leads the womens competition through one round after posting a 298.North Texas cruised to a seven-under par 281 team total on the mens side. Second-round play began this morning with the final round slated for Wednesday.
