Academic standouts honored

Western Kentucky University recognized more than 260 student-athletes and support staff Tuesday for their work in the classroom during the 2007 calendar year at the school’s Academic Athletic Awards Banquet at E.A. Diddle Arena.

Brittany Waiz and Mike Duncan from the tennis and cross country and track and field programs, respectively, were named WKU’s Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while volleyball and men’s soccer were selected the Female and Male Scholar Teams of the Year based on their cumulative grade-point average.

Twenty-six individuals from the school’s 13 programs were recognized for their induction into the Chi Alpha Sigma national college athletic honor society. They were: Cosmas Bor (men’s cross country/track and field), Cameron Brown (men’s swimming), Kristin Cocchiarella (women’s soccer), Kevin Dick (men’s cross country/track and field), Dustin Downey (men’s soccer), Samuel Drummond (men’s soccer), Erin Fulkerson (women’s tennis), Heather Hammond (women’s cross country/track and field), Drew Hawkins (men’s cross country/track and field), Marissa Heebner (women’s swimming), Kelly Hofmeyer (volleyball), Rana Johnson (women’s swimming), Jennifer Kempf (softball), Andrew McCloud (football), Whitney McCory (volleyball), Mitch Miller (men’s swimming), Ashley Moore (women’s cross country/track and field), Cate Morgan (women’s swimming), Ben Paxton (baseball), Nikki Ringelberg (women’s soccer), Victoria Sansom (women’s golf), Gavin Smellie (men’s cross country/track and field), Bo Smith (football), Clay Stephens (football), Stephanie Terrell (women’s swimming) and Andy True (men’s tennis).

To be inducted into the honor society, individuals must carry a 3.4 or better cumulative GPA, letter in their sport and have at least junior standing academically.

Also honored for earning Academic All-America or All-District recognition from either the College Sports Information Directors of America or their coaches associations were Amanda Adams (women’s cross country/track and field), Jennifer Adams (women’s swimming), Wes Brown (men’s swimming), Dan Cline (football), Cocchiarella, Chris Davies (men’s soccer), Jessica Delaunay (women’s cross country/track and field), Rachel Friedman (women’s soccer), Meredith Goodson (women’s soccer), Hammond, Tyrell Hayden (football), Natalie Leeper (women’s cross country/track and field), Miller, Kellie Morrison (women’s cross country/track and field), Justin Perry (men’s golf), Marion Rumph (football) and Smith.

In addition, the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, women’s soccer, women’s swimming and volleyball teams were recognized for being selected Academic All-America squads by their coaches associations.

Individuals invited to the banquet have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, or posted a grade-point average of 3.0 or better in at least one of the last two semesters. That included 20 students who recorded a 4.0 GPA in the fall or last spring.
