WKU Sports Briefs: WKU golfers remain in first at SBC tourney

The Western Kentucky men’s golf team held on to first place Tuesday after the second round of the Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Championships in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The Hilltoppers shot 286 on the second day for a combined total of 572 strokes.

WKU leads South Alabama by five strokes at the PGA Village par-72, 6,968-yard North Course.
Brent Long leads all golfers after his second-round, 4-under-par 68. He is 9-under for the tourney and four strokes ahead of South Alabama’s Johnny Caldwell.
Parker Scarbro shot the second-best round of the day for WKU with a 1-under-par 71. He is tied for 29th place. Justin Perry is tied for 16th after 36 holes with a two-day total of 146.
Robby Shaw shot a 76 Tuesday and is 20th with a two-round score of 147.
The Lady Toppers took 324 strokes for a combined two-day total of 642, which puts them in eighth – 32 shots behind leader North Texas.
The final round of the tournament was scheduled for this morning. Western Kentucky has never won a Sun Belt golf title.

Topper baseball team falls at Austin Peay
The Western Kentucky baseball team lost 11-5 to Austin Peay on Tuesday in Clarksville, Tenn.
WKU starter Garrett Stembridge (3-2) – making just his second career start – suffered the loss as he gave up five runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Matt Ransdell and Jordan Newton homered for the Hilltoppers (15-17).
Western Kentucky returns to Nick Denes Field for the first time in two weeks when it opens a three-game series with IUPU-Fort Wayne on Friday.
Wilson named SBC female track athlete of week
Western Kentucky sprinter Shanea Wilson was named Sun Belt Conference female track performer of the week Tuesday for her efforts at the Sea Ray Relays this past weekend.
In the 100-meter dash, Wilson earned a berth to the NCAA Mideast Regional with a 12th-place time of 11.66 seconds. That time is the second-fastest ever recorded by a Lady Topper, next to her own school-standard of 11.63 set in 2004.
Wilson was also a member of the fourth-place 400-meter relay team, which recorded its second regional qualifying time in as many weeks, clocking 45.52.
WKU will be in action this weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
