The Western Kentucky basketball program hosted two junior college recruits over the weekend.

Perrin Buford, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard, visited WKU on Sunday. Originally from Decatur, Ala., Buford averaged 14 points and six rebounds in 26 games during the 2013-14 season at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis.

“Long, rangy guard that can do everything on the basketball court,” STCC coach Jerry Nichols said. “The kid, wherever he goes, he’ll be a stud, to be honest. There’s not too many 6-7 guards that can do what he does.”

Buford was a standout at Hillcrest High in Alabama, where he was named all-state by the Alabama Sports Writers Association after the 2011-12 season. He spent the 2012-13 campaign with Motlow State Community College in Lynchburg, Tenn., where he averaged 10.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

Missouri State, Morehead State, Illinois State, Middle Tennessee and Tennessee State have reportedly pursued Buford.

On Friday, Kevin Punter, a 6-foot-3 guard originally from the Bronx, N.Y., was on the WKU campus.

Punter averaged 20.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 32 games for State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo.

Punter reportedly has offers from Texas-El Paso, Duquesne, Missouri, Texas San Antonio, Missouri State, Southern, Texas Arlington and Buffalo. In 2010, Punter led Salesian High (New Rochelle, N.Y.) to a CHSAA Class B championship. In 2011, Punter helped his team win the title again with 31 points in the Class B title game.

During the 2011-12 season, Punter played at Body of Christ Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., (an institution that no longer exists), where he scored 24.2 points per game.

“(He) can really score,” SFCC coach Kevin Thomas said.

“He’s very efficient. He’s not really one of those guys that’s a shot-hunter – he’s very efficient. A very smooth player who can really get to the rim, has a really nice mid-range game and really good in transition. Defensively, he gets a lot of deflections because of his long arms.”

One of WKU’s other targets, Jabari McGhee, visited Louisiana-Lafayette this weekend. McGhee, a 6-foot-7 forward originally from Albany, Ga., is a three-star prospect from Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.) who also has visited Florida Gulf Coast and was in Bowling Green earlier this month.

McGhee originally committed to Auburn before enrolling at Hargrave.

Division I basketball programs can sign players to a national letter of intent April 16 through May 21. The Hilltoppers signed forward Justin Johnson (Perry County Central), guard Avery Patterson (Wheeler High, Marietta, Ga.) and guard Derrick Clayton (Elev8 Sports Institute, Delray Beach, Fla.) in November and also have a verbal commitment from forward Rob Marberry (Franklin Road Academy, Nashville).

Novian Cherry, a 6-foot-4 guard at Mesa College in San Diego, committed to WKU in February but rescinded that commitment and opted to play another season at the junior college level.

Western Kentucky finished 20-12 in 2013-14 and loses senior guards Brandon Harris and Caden Dickerson and senior forward O’Karo Akamune.

Harris, Akamune join Hornets

The Bowling Green Hornets announced the signings Monday of Harris and Akamune.

Harris, a 6-foot-1 guard originally from Oklahoma City, averaged 5.8 points during his senior season at WKU. Florida-native and 6-foot-7 forward Akamune averaged five rebounds and 4.1 points during the 2013-14 season.

Harris and Akamune will become the sixth and seventh former Western Kentucky players to don a Bowling Green Hornets uniform, joining Jamal Crook, Teeng Akol, Kahlil McDonald, Boris Siakam and Marcus Vasquez.

Harris and Akamune are expected to make their debut for Bowling Green on Saturday in Nashville versus the Middle Tennessee Storm (2-1).
