Rowdy Harris of Bowling Green lines up a put during the Danny Spillman BGIT golf tournament at the Bowling Green Country Club on Saturday.

It was a Jekyll and Hyde kind of day for South Warren’s Sydney McClanahan during Saturday’s Bowling Green Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club.

The South Warren senior was sizzling on the course at times with four birdies and an eagle, but at times the struggle was real – with five bogeys and two double bogeys. The up and down day led to 4-over par 76 – still good enough for McClanahan to tie for fourth in a possible preview of next month’s state tournament, which will take place at the same course.

“I really wasn’t expecting to do that good, honestly,” McClanahan said. “I feel good about how I did. I kind of had some shots all over the place, but my putting really saved me. It was probably the craziest round of my life.

“It was really funny. It felt like two different rounds combined into one – like a bad one and a good one.”

With a field that included a lot of the top teams and individual state contenders, McClanahan said she is feeling good about where her game is heading into the region tournament which is scheduled for Sept. 24 at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Russellville.

“I felt really confident on how I did and I feel like I’ve been really consistent with my scores,” McClanahan said. “They have all been pretty good. I am happy about it, especially for my senior year. It’s kind of crazy that this is my last regular tournament ever. I think it was a nice way to cap it off.”

Bowling Green’s Caroline Childers also tied for fourth with a 4-over 76, helping the host Lady Purples finish fifth in the team standings with a 342 – 10 shots better than South Warren.

“I feel like I did good,” Childers said. “The conditions were really tough. The greens were really fast and the ground was pretty dry, so I feel like the way I was hitting it – how I ended up scoring – I am happy with it.”

She added her round was a nice confidence boost should she return next month when Bowling Green Country Club hosts the state tournament.

“It feels pretty good because I know we were playing some of the state yardage, what we will use at state,” Childers said. “Just to be out there and see kind of what it might be like in a month – it’s good.”

Cooper’s Reagan Ramage was the overall winner with an even-par 72, edging Rowan County’s Athena Singh in a one-hole playoff. Sacred Heart’s Keira Yun finished third with a 3-over 75.

Sacred Heart finished with a team score of 311 to finish first. Daviess County (328) was second, edging Madison Central by one shot.

On the boys’ side, Allen County-Scottsville’s Barton Rutledge birdied his final hole to move into a tie for fifth overall with a 1-over 73.

“It felt good just to finish on that last hole with a birdie,” Rutledge said. “I didn’t have the best back nine. I had two or three putts that were really a struggle for me. Just to finish out with a birdie really helped a lot to get the top-five finish.”

Rutledge finished the day with three birdies and four bogeys – with all three birdies coming on holes 6-9 on the course.

“I came off the tee really well,” Rutledge said. “The irons were really good. The putter sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t work. That’s going to happen in golf.”

He added that his performance was a good gauge going forward, especially with nine out of the top 10 teams in the state in the field.

“It feels good to know that I can possibly do it again at state or even go lower at state,” Rutledge said. “It felt good to do that with this field. I could have played this thing a little better. I left two shots out there today. Coming back I know what I need to work on to help score lower the next time I play here.”

Adrian Bewley, a Bowling Green native who is homeschooled, finished tied for ninth with a 2-over 74.

Greenwood’s Ryan Loiars tied for 12th with a 3-over 75, helping Greenwood finish seventh in the team standings.

“I started off a little shaky,” Loiars said. “I really got in a groove going birdie, birdie on 10 and 11 and then just told myself to par out from there – make smart plays. Overall I think I did OK. I could have done better as always, but I feel like I did pretty good.”

Loiars said it was a nice round to build off of heading towards the final month of the high school golf season.

“It’s a great boost of confidence going into these last few weeks of the season,” Loiars said. “Maybe work on a few things. Just get everything straightened out and play simple, boring golf going forward.”

Christian Academy of Louisville’s Will Judd carded a 2-under 70 to earn the individual title. St. Xavier’s Will Stuart and Luc Kelty, and Madison Southern’s Tucker Jones finished in a tie for second with an even-par 72 with Kelty taking second via scorecard tiebreaker.

St. Xavier shot 298 to edge Madison Central by one shot for the team title. Christian Academy of Louisville (302) finished third.{&end}
