Local swimmers advance to state finals

Several local swimmers advanced to next weekend’s state final swim meet after earning top-three finishes in the opening round of the state tournament on Saturday at Russell County.
Swimmers from Bowling Green, Greenwood and South Warren advanced to the state finals. The state field will also include next best 15 times across the state, with those entrants still to be determined.

The finals begin Thursday at the Lancaster Aquatic Center at the University of Kentucky.
Bowling Green’s Alfonso Verduzco advanced after finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 200-yard freestyle. Warren Woodall finished first in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 butterfly. Cooper Neal finished second in the 100 breaststroke, while Matias Verduzco finished third in the 500 freestyle.
Woodall, Neal, James Dinan and Alfonso Verduzco advanced after finishing second in the 200 medley relay. Neal, Hamilton Gover, Matias Verduzco and Tristan Griffin finished second in the 200 freestyle relay while Woodall, Griffin and the Verduzcos won the 400 freestyle relay.
South Warren’s Brian Bosse advanced after finishing second in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Bosse joined Eli Jones, Lari Skeric and Kenan Agaonivic to finish first in the 200 medley relay and second in the 400 freestyle relay.
On the girls’ side, Greenwood’s Amelia Matzke had a big day qualifying for four events.
Matzke finished first in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 fly. She joined Brianne Flikkema, Leela Kaul and Mia Usinger to finish first in the 200 freestyle relay and second in the 200 medley relay.

Flikkema finished third in the 100 breaststroke.
Bowling Green’s Riley Crowe finished third in the 200 freestyle and second in the 500 freestyle, while teammate Carlie Bowen finished third in the 100 freestyle.
Bowen, Crowe, Cary Bowen and Lucy Lowe advanced in two relays – finishing second in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
South Warren’s Sarah McGuinness finished second in the 100 fly and the 100 backstroke. She joined Avery Beil, Ella Payne and Payton Bowden to finish third in the 200 medley relay.
South Warren’s Hannah Andrews finished third in the 500 freestyle.
