The 13th annual Warren Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame recognition and ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 26-27 at WCHS.

The 2024 class will be recognized Jan. 27 between the girl/boy basketball doubleheader against Greenwood, and the induction ceremony will take place Jan. 28 in the school’s auditorium. This year’s class includes:

Curtis Turley (Boys’ Basketball Coach, 1980-85)

Coach Curtis Turley compiled a 90-54 record across his five seasons in charge of the Dragon basketball program. He also has the distinction of leading the team to multiple firsts in program history, including its first-ever postseason victory, first region title and KHSAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, and first-ever KHSAA Sweet Sixteen win.

At the time of his departure, Turley was the all-time leader in wins at WCHS and he currently sits third in win percentage for the program. His 1982-83 team, which also claimed the Region 4 championship, won a then school-record 26 games, which lasted until Tim Riley’s 2001-02 team surpassed that mark.

Turley would lead the Dragons to three 20-win seasons in his five-year stint as head basketball coach.

Matt Maresca (Boys’ Basketball, 2000-04)

One of the most decorated basketball players in program history, Matt Maresca was a huge part of the Dragon basketball’s four straight Region 4 final appearances, three straight KHSAA Sweet Sixteen appearances, and 2003-04 KHSAA State Championship team.

As an individual, he finished with 1,058 points in his career (16th all-time) and was a two-team all-district selection (2003, 2004), a two-time all-region selection in 2003 (third team) and 2004 (first team), a member of the 2004 all-state team (second team), a member of the 2004 KHSAA all-state tournament, the 2004 Region 4 MVP, the 2004 KABC Region 4 Player of the Year, a 2004 Kentucky-Indiana All-Star and a 2004 Kentucky-Ohio All-Star.

In Maresca’s four years at Warren Central, the Dragons put together a dominant 107-22 record. After graduating in 2004, Maresca earned a scholarship to play basketball at Western Kentucky University where he played for four seasons and appeared in two NCAA Tournaments (2008 and 2009), where the Hilltoppers appeared in the Round of 32 and the Sweet Sixteen.

Bobby Cook (Boys’ Basketball Coach, 1988-96)

Coach Bobby Cook led the Dragons to a record of 142-91 in eight seasons at the helm. He is one of four coaches in Warren Central history to lead the team to a Region 4 title and was the first coach in program history to win 100 games. His 142 wins put him at third all-time in program history behind the likes of only Tim Riley and William Unseld. Cook’s 1993-94 Dragon basketball team finished with a 26-4 record, which was tied for the most wins in program history at the time and set a then school record for best win percentage.

Over his eight seasons as coach, he led the Dragons to one district title (1993), four Region 4 tournaments (1989, 1993, 1995, 1996) and one appearance in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen (1993).

Stan England (Warren County HS – Golf, 1960-64)

Stan England was a standout for the Warren County golf team as the 1950s turned to the 1960s. England captained the team for his sophomore, junior and senior seasons (1961-63) as the team pushed for uncharted territory for the school. His 1962 team, led by fellow Warren Central Athletics Hall of Fame Coach Don Acton, became the first team in program history to qualify for the state tournament as England led the charge for the Dragons.

After graduating from Warren County High School, England has been an active member of the Bowling Green community serving as an advocate for junior golf in Bowling Green, Warren County, the Kentucky Golf Association and the Professional Golf Association. He also served in the United States Army Reserve, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, local diversity boards, youth basketball and other community service organizations.

Suzanne Britt (Warren County HS – Track and Field, 1963-67)

Suzanne Britt was an early star in the early days of KHSAA’s sponsorship of girls’ track and field, and she quickly made her mark on the sport at the region and state levels. As a freshman in 1964, she placed third in the softball throw at the state meet while also finishing fourth in the shot put. It was during her sophomore year where she began to assert her dominance over the competition as she would win her first of three consecutive region titles in discus. She would also claim the region title in both the shot-put and the softball throw. She would ride that wave to a state championship in the first-ever girls’ discus competition, establishing a mark that stood for multiple years.

Britt’s junior year would see her claim the region title in the discus and the shot-put while finishing runner-up in the softball throw. At the state meet in Lexington, she would finish fourth in the shot-put and runner-up in discus. As a senior, Britt would find the podium three more times at the region meet finishing third in the softball throw, runner-up in the shot-put and as region champion in the discus. In her final appearance at the state meet, she would add one more accolade to her impressive resume by finding runner-up in the discus.

One of the greatest athletes in the history of Warren County High School, Britt blazed the trail for female track and field athletes across Kentucky.

1981-82 Warren Central Boys’ Basketball Team

The 1981-82 Warren Central boys’ basketball team laid the foundation for what has become one of the strongest high school basketball programs in the state of Kentucky. Led by head coach (and now WCHS Athletics Hall of Famer) Curtis Turley, the Dragons finished the regular season 17-9, highlighted by a historic 40-point victory over longtime rival Bowling Green, before knocking off Bowling Green and Warren East to claim the program’s first district title. They would then roll into the Region 4 tournament where they would knock off Glasgow, Clinton County and Auburn to claim the school’s first Region 4 title and punch their ticket to the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen.

Under the lights at Rupp Arena, the Dragons would knock off Fort Thomas’ Highlands High School in the opening round of the tournament before falling to North Hardin in the state quarterfinals. That Dragons basketball team was led by junior Craig Eversoll (who would graduate the school’s all-time leading scorer the following season) and senior Ben Matlock (who still owns multiple WC boys’ basketball single game and single season records).
