Hard-hitting Spartans take down Greenwood

The South Warren volleyball team was nearly unstoppable on the corners, using dominant play from Kirbey Clark and Hannah Yonts to down District 14 rival Greenwood 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17) on Thursday at South Warren High School.

Clark had 24 kills and Yonts added 17 kills as South Warren (15-5 overall, 4-0 District 14) extended its district win streak to 28.

“We’ve been searching all year long to see where kids fit,” South Warren coach Justin Griffin said. “I think everyone really stepped up there. Our pin players played really well and when they play well we are going to be tough to beat.”

Clark said South Warren, which beat Greenwood in the last two Region 4 title games but was unranked in the latest state coaches poll, was determined to make a statement against 14th-ranked Greenwood on Thursday.

“I definitely think people looked down on us and weren’t expecting us to be as good as we are,” Clark said. “We had something to prove and I think we proved it tonight.”

South Warren got the momentum early, surviving a tight Game 1 that featured 13 ties and eight lead changes. Greenwood had set point before the Spartans got two kills from Yonts and a kill from Meredith Woods to rally back for the win.

Greenwood (14-2, 3-1) scored the first four points in Game 2, but South Warren eventually took the lead 15-14 after a pair of kills from Yont. Kills by Alexa Davis and Emmie Bender helped the Lady Gators right the ship and Greenwood was able to pull away and even the match at 1-1.

Greenwood jumped out to a 7-3 lead in Game 3 before South Warren came back with four straight points to tie the game. The Spartans eventually took control, with Yonts and Clark combining for 10 kills in Game 3.

“They run a faster offense with Lydia Jackson setting the ball quickly to outside,” Greenwood coach Jason Reels said. “We are bigger than them, but they are a little faster than us. We have to pick it up the next time we play them. I think we will be more prepared for them.”

The Spartans never trailed in Game 4, with Clark helping South Warren to close the match and keep the district streak intact.

Jackson had 58 assists for the Spartans, with Woods adding 10 kills.

Davis led Greenwood with 16 kills. Bender finished with 12 kills and Leah Martens added 11 kills. Rileigh Stivers finished with 48 assists.

“I thought the first three sets were pretty much anybody’s,” Reels said. “Then when you get down 2-1, then you are battling from behind. You are on the road and it’s the first time we have had the pressure put on us from a district team. I thought we learned some things about ourselves in the ways we need to respond the next time we face them.”

Greenwood will play at Warren East at 7 p.m. on Monday, while South Warren will play at Warren Central at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
