Purples’ Kenner, Cougars’ Adler among KFCA honorees

The Kentucky Football Coaches Association announced its 2017 awards Saturday.

Bowling Green coach Kevin Wallace and Purples senior Ziyon Kenner were named the Coach and Player of the Year, respectively, in Class 5A, District 2.

Wallace led the Purples to a 10-3 record. Bowling Green advanced to the third round of the Class 5A state playoffs before falling to South Warren in the quarterfinals.

Kenner, a wide receiver, tallied 56 catches for 801 yards and nine touchdowns. Kenner also rushed for 273 yards and five touchdowns.

Logan County’s Todd Adler was named the Class 4A, District 1 Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to an unbeaten regular season. Logan County (11-1) advanced to the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs before falling to Hopkinsville.

Logan County junior offensive/defensive lineman Caden McKinnis was named the Class 4A, District 1 Player of the Year. McKinnis helped block for 1,000-yard rusher Gary Hardy on offense, while on defense he totaled a team-high 78 tackles.

Warren East’s Jeff Griffith was named the Class 4A, District 2 Coach of the Year. In his first year leading the Raiders, Griffith led Warren East to a 6-5 season that ended with a first-round playoff loss to Hopkinsville.

Allen County-Scottsville senior quarterback Chase Wilson was named the Class 4A, District 2 Player of the Year. Wilson completed 142 of 249 passes for 2,549 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Glasgow’s Jeff Garmon was named the Class 2A, District 3 Coach of the Year after leading the Scotties to a 10-4 record. Glasgow advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals, where the Scotties fell to Danville.

Glasgow junior offensive/defensive lineman Tanner Bowles was named the Class 2A, District 3 Player of the Year. The Scotties’ starting left tackle, Bowles provided blind-side protection for Glasgow’s quarterback tandem of Tanner Abernathy and Dalvin Smith and helped the Scotties gain more than 4,000 yards of total offense this season.
