Former Sumitomo workers may be eligible for job assistance

Workers laid off by Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems in Scottsville may be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance, according to the state Office of Employment and Training.

There will be two orientation meetings for workers at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday at the Barren River Area Development District office at 177 Graham Ave.

Workers should bring their driver’s license and Social Security card to the meeting.

Workers who were laid off by the company on or after May 18, 2008, who exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits before they were called back to work or found another job also may be eligible for retroactive benefits.

Qualified workers may apply for financial assistance, training and job search and relocation assistance.

This assistance will be available through June 18, 2011.

Affected workers also can inquire about benefits at a local OET office. Applications may be filed at the Bowling Green Career Center, 803 Chestnut St.
