U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Kentucky, on Wednesday honored several students at Barren County High School and Glasgow High School for winning or placing in the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for Kentucky’s Second District, represented by Guthrie’s office.

The awards ceremony at the Barren County Innovation Zone for the competition is held to encourage middle and high school students to code and pursue computer science careers, according to the challenge website. BCHS students Emmaline Phelps, Brooke Gibson and Cole Young, claimed first together for their app Allergy AWARE, which aims to assist those dealing with food allergies in managing their dietary restrictions; GHS student Danica Stephens placed fourth for the app Serving Society, which is intended to help members of her community coordinate on meeting community needs.

“We are incredibly proud of our students and the way they channel their knowledge, creativity and teamwork into developing apps that make a real difference in people’s lives,” Barren County Schools Superintendent Amy Irwin said. “Their success is supported by talented teachers who guide and inspire them throughout the process, and by generous community partners who share their expertise. When all of these forces come together, the results are nothing short of remarkable.”
