Lady Tops’ Hackett tied for third at Coach Mo Classic

Western Kentucky’s women’s golf team was in fifth at the Coach Mo Classic following 36 holes on Monday at St. John’s Golf Club in St. Augustine, Florida.

The Lady Tops were led by Sydney Hackett, whose 1-under 143 on Monday had her tied for third.

The Lady Tops were without senior Catie Craig, who tees it up at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur beginning on Wednesday. Despite missing Craig, WKU had two players inside the Top 20 and three inside the Top 30.

Purdue, who is ranked No. 39 in the latest national rankings, leads the event at 1-over. WKU is 26-over through two rounds, but leads several strong programs in the 16-team field including No. 59 Minnesota, No. 69 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 78 Furman, No. 90 UTSA and No. 97 North Florida.

Hackett played the par 4s at even par, tied for third-best in the field, and was 1-under on the par 3s, also tied for third-best. Hackett tallied seven birdies on the day, tied for fifth-best in the field.

Averi Cline had WKU’s lone eagle on the day, a three on the par-5 No. 8 hole in the second round. Cline was 2-under on the par 5s, tied for fifth-best in the field.

Nina McMurtrey had 26 pars, tied for most in the field, and Julia Zigrossi had 25, tied for sixth-best.

WKU was very steady throughout Monday, totaling a tournament-best 117 pars.

WKU is tied for second in par 3 scoring at 9-over. Thanks to two hole-in-ones, Purdue dominated the par 3 scoring at 2-under on the day, 11 shots better than its competition.

The Lady Tops were 26-over on the par 4s, good for third-best in the field.

The third and final round of the Coach Mo Classic begins on Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start.

WKU MEN SIXTH AT MEMPHIS INTERCOLLEGIATE

WKU men’s golf was in sixth at the Memphis Intercollegiate following 36 holes on Monday at Colonial Country Club in Cordova, Tennessee.

The Hilltoppers were 35-over, but just four shots back of fourth place. Gage Doyle led WKU and was tied for 18th.

The Tops played the par 3s at 6-over on Monday, tied with Illinois for second-best in the field. WKU was fifth in par 4-scoring and fifth in par 5-scoring, as well.

WKU had 71 pars and 13 birdies on Monday, both good for sixth in the field.

After a first-round 82, freshman Trevor Drew bounced back with a second-round 73, WKU’s best round of the day.

The Hilltoppers are back in action Tuesday for the final round of the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club.
