Off to a bad start

Two months in, the Trump administration is a muddle of lawlessness, broken promises and unforced errors.
Lawlessness first. Starting with Elon Musk’s single-handed destruction of agencies created by Congress and under Congressional jurisdiction, Trump and his toadies have set themselves above the law. Their attitude was perfectly summed up by Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, saying “I don’t care what the judges think” when asked about his agency’s illegal deportations.
Broken promises. Trump pledged to lower prices, end the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, and conduct “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.” But he hasn’t taken the first step to make these things happen. Prices are still going up. The wars steam ahead because Putin and Netanyahu want them to. Thankfully, the deportation rate remains low though it’s shockingly indiscriminate. Despite Trump’s promise to go after “the worst of the worst,” two of his first deportees were legally present academics never charged with any crime.
Unforced errors. Appointing a conspiracy-mad Secretary of Health and Human Services to Make America Sick Again. On again off again tariffs that roil the markets, promise higher inflation, and make business planning and investment impossible. Cozying up to Vladimir Putin, who recently humiliated Trump by making him cool his heels for an hour before answering a scheduled phone call on Ukraine. Giving the cold shoulder to the NATO allies we will sorely miss when China bids to take over the world.
I admit it’s only been two months, but Trump’s policies so far promise to make America less democratic, weaker, poorer, sicker and more divided. His priorities are far from those of our timid senators, Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, or our representative Brett Guthrie. Feel free to contact them and ask why they won’t speak up for themselves and tell him so.
