Nobody is coming for Christians

Mark Doggett’s recent opinion piece (March 16, “The Christians are next”) was unpersuasive. Doggett’s thesis is apparently that Christians are going to be persecuted for their religious beliefs. Doggett cites as evidence of this the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Christians in Pennsylvania “being arrested for being pro-life”, ten states supporting gender-affirming medical care, one politician stating that conversion therapy is dangerous.
None of these points shows that Christians are being pursued for their beliefs. First, the fact is that the opening ceremony was inspired by Greek mythology and was not at all related to the Last Supper, according to Thomas Jolly, the artistic director for the ceremony.
Second, Doggett presumably refers here to the arrest of Mark Houck by the FBI. Houck was acquitted on all charges by a jury of his peers. And anyway, he wasn’t arrested on charges of being “pro-life” but for assault – he shoved to the ground a 72-year-old volunteer, who was escorting patients into the Planned Parenthood clinic.
Third, the fact that 10 states support gender-affirming care does not infringe on the right of anyone to believe what they like about it. And 10 states are actually a minority of the United States.
Finally, the fact that one politician disagrees with you about conversion therapy does not show that “The Christians” are under attack for what they believe but for the fact that they are passing off as medicine what a pseudo-scientific homophobic practice.
Nobody is coming for the Christians. If you think that on the basis of what Fox “News” and other fake news organizations are feeding you (as part of an algorithm whose whole point is to anger you in order to get clicks and thereby make money), then do yourself a favor: turn off your computer, and go outside and touch some grass.
