Burlington store coming to Gary Farms

- A “Coming Soon!” sign sits in front of what will be the new Burlington store on Tuesday at the Shoppes at Gary Farms space formerly occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond.
One retailer’s bankruptcy is another’s opportunity, it seems.
Burlington, a national off-price department store founded in 1972 as Burlington Coat Factory, plans to move into the Shoppes at Gary Farms space occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond until that company’s 2023 bankruptcy.
That bankruptcy and eventual closure of all Bed Bath & Beyond stores was seized on as an opportunity by Burlington, which last year purchased the leases on more than 40 of the closed stores.
An account executive with the Minnesota-based Carmichael Lynch firm that handles marketing for Burlington confirmed the plans for Bowling Green in an email.
Julia DePillis wrote that Burlington will open a Bowling Green store this fall, and the New Jersey-based retailer has placed a sign on the former Bed Bath & Beyond space announcing its plans.
DePillis didn’t have an exact date for opening the store in the 2300 Gary Farms Boulevard retail center, saying only that the Burlington store will offer “everyday low prices on a wide assortment of brand-name merchandise.”
According to Burlington’s website, the retailer offers low-priced brand-name apparel for ladies, men, children and babies, along with home décor items and accessories.
It’s a strategy that seems to be working. In an age when online retail has battered brick-and-mortar stores, Burlington has continued to grow.
Burlington has more than doubled its number of locations over the past decade and now has more than 1,000 stores across 46 states and Puerto Rico. It is now the third largest off-price retailer after TJX Companies and Ross Stores.
The Bowling Green store will be Burlington’s seventh in Kentucky, joining three in the Louisville area, two in Lexington and one in Owensboro.
Burlington, purchased by Bain Capital Partners for $2.06 billion in 2007, is now a Fortune 500 company that reported net sales of $9.7 billion for the 2023 fiscal year.
