It was a tough spot, and Bowling Green junior Trevor Dennis knew it.
With the Purples up 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning against Madison Central in the first round of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament on Friday in Lexington, Dennis was summoned to the mound to put down the Indians’ rally. Inheriting runners on second and third with one out, Dennis got a strikeout, then issued back-to-back walks to allow one run in before ending the threat with another strikeout.
Dennis, who hadn’t pitched since the District 14 championship game more than two weeks before, then sailed through the bottom of the seventh to earn the save in Bowling Green’s 8-6 win.
“Coach (Matt Myers) called my number and I just came in and did the best I could,” Dennis said.
