POLICE NEWS: Trial scheduled for man charged in fatal accident involving a scooter

The trial for Johnny Dwight Roberts, facing several charges in connection with a fatal crash involving a scooter, is scheduled to begin Oct. 27.

During a pretrial conference Monday, Warren Circuit Judge Steve Wilson scheduled the trial for Roberts, 47, of Bowling Green, who has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, possession of an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle and first-degree persistent felony offender.

Roberts, who is being represented by Sam Lowe of the Department of Public Advocacy, is accused of driving the vehicle that struck a scooter driven by Marricus Cox, 21, of Bowling Green on Veterans Memorial Lane on Sept. 21.

Roberts allegedly threw beer cans from the vehicle after the collision.

He faces up to 15 years on the manslaughter and tampering charges, though the persistent felony offender charge could increase the sentence to 20 years if convicted.

Arrest — Ashley J. Rigsby, 23, 5297 Louisville Road, No. 706 was arrested at about 2:45 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Old Morgantown Road and charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, third-degree possession of a controlled substance and prescription controlled substance not in the proper container.

According to a Bowling Green Police Department arrest report, officers responding to a drug tip found Rigsby sitting on the steps of an apartment.

Police searching her found a syringe in her right jacket pocket containing an unknown liquid. Rigsby told police she had injected methamphetamine within the last two weeks, the report stated.

Also found in her jacket were five Clonazepam pills and a black flashlight containing a bag of marijuana in the battery compartment, according to the report.

Rigsby remains in the Warren County Regional Jail under a $6,200 cash bond.

Burglary, theft, criminal mischief — Someone broke into Sally’s Beauty Supply, 1680 Campbell Lane, and stole $739 in cash between 9:20 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a city police report.

Entry was gained via the roof, where a rope had been tied to a partially dismantled air conditioning unit and lowered through the ceiling. Damage and losses totaled $6,239.

Recovery — Two large marijuana plants were discovered Friday on property on O.J. Basham Road, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies acting on a tip found the drugs, with a street value of $2,000, and collected and destroyed them. The incident remains under investigation.

Robbery — A Bowling Green woman reported that her son had been robbed by a group of people in the 1000 block of Roselawn Way between 7:30 p.m. and 7:35 p.m. Monday, according to a city police report.

The boy told police that he went for a run and a tan Cadillac pulled up behind him and three men wearing masks jumped out of the car, held his arms behind his back, punched him numerous times in the stomach and took his cell phone before fleeing the scene in the car.

The boy did not appear visibly injured, but was wearing a torn T-shirt, the report stated.

Theft — Someone stole a 2003 Ford Mustang parked in the 900 block of East 14th Avenue between 8 p.m. Monday and 4:14 a.m. today, according to a city police report. Losses totaled $5,500.

Theft of controlled substance — Someone stole a purse from a 2008 Nissan Armada parked in the 800 block of State Street between 10 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. Saturday, according to a city police report.

The purse contained 70 Zoloft pills, 30 Xanax pills, four hydrocodone pills, four Keflex capsules and an inhaler.

Identity theft — A Bowling Green man reported that someone attempted to open a credit card in his name at Macy’s at Greenwood Mall, 2625 Scottsville Road, between 8 a.m. Thursday and 4:37 p.m. Monday, according to a city police report.
