Greenwood Mall plays hopscotch with tenants

Leaving Forever 21 at Greenwood Mall on Thursday afternoon was a reluctant experience for Tracy Murr and Kaleigh Vance.
That’s because Murr and Vance, two juniors at Greenwood High School, found out Saturday will be the store’s last day at its present location next to Dillard’s in Greenwood Mall.

Leaving a store that was mostly cleared out except for a few racks of discounted and regularly priced merchandise was unpleasant, they said.
“We don’t like it,” Murr said, adding that she normally goes to Forever 21 for the latest trendy tops and other accessories.
Forever 21 will close for a month and reopen in the mall’s center court, occupying 7,000 square feet by the end of September as a combination Forever 21 and a For Love 21, according to Greenwood Mall General Manager Heidi Olson.
Since 2002, Forever 21 has been ranked one of the 50 largest privately held companies in Los Angeles with more than 355 locations nationwide with the brands Forever 21, Forever XXI, For Love 21 and Gadzooks, averaging 30 new store openings each year, according to its Web site.
Both, however, said they would shop at the latest addition to Greenwood Mall – Charlotte Russe – while they wait for their favorite store to reopen.
Charlotte Russe, a mall-based specialty retailer of fashion apparel and accessories marketed to young women in their teens and twenties, debuted in Greenwood Mall on April 27, Olson said.

According to the company’s earnings statement released at the end of June, Charlotte Russe has opened at least 26 stores this year, with another 24 slated to be opened before they year ends.
Olson said this year Greenwood Mall has been playing hopscotch with its tenants before the back-to-school craze, with many tenants moving and remodeling as some leave and others join Bowling Green’s main shopping thoroughfare.
Another recent addition to the mall is Weight Watchers, which moved into 2,000 square feet of space after operating in the Fairview Shopping Center.
“It’s got its own following. People who are into it, are very much into it.” Olson said. “We’re excited to have them here and they’re doing well in their new space.”
Consumers may also notice that Wilson’s Leather is gone, and now College Station, a temporary tenant that specializes in sports apparel and accessories, has taken its space.
Another temporary tenant is It’s Sew You, an embroidery company that caters to children’s wear and other embroidery-ready items. It’s Sew You recently opened in the former Nextel space in the mall’s center court next to The Children’s Place, Olson said.
Also, Bath and Body Works, which offers shower gels, lotions, candles and other bathroom accessories, boosted its size by 600 square feet, reopening on May 21 to a total of 3,200 square feet.
“They just had a tiny stock room before and they do so much (sales) volume, it was necessary,” Olson said.
Other changes and additions to the mall include:
€Vanity, a North Dakota-based teen apparel store with 200 locations in 23 states, is remodeled its spot in Greenwood Mall, Olson said.
€Smoothie and Pretzel Company will debut in the fall in what used to be the Great Steak and Potato in Greenwood Mall’s food court, Olson said. The restaurant will go next to Lotus and Suki Hana and will sell ice cream in about 15 flavors made daily as well as offer fresh fruit smoothies and pretzels.
€Flavor Mania has moved to the hhgregg shopping center, which also saw the addition of David’s Bridal recently.
€Lane Bryant, which focuses on plus-size women’s clothing and lingerie, will remodel and relocate this fall next to Dillards where Forever 21 is now, taking up 6,000 square feet. Building will start in August, and Lane Bryant plans to be open for the holidays, according to Olson.
