John R. Smingler

John Robert Smingler, 88, of Aberdeen, Scotland, formerly of Syracuse, N.Y., died Oct. 24, 2005, at an Aberdeen hospital.
The Onondaga County, N.Y., native was a retired vice president of Singer Sewing Machine Co. and director of Breckenridge Job Corp Center in Morganfield. He was a principal of Canandaigua Academy in Canandaigua, N.Y., for 10 years, a graduate of Hobart & William Smith College in 1940 and joined the British Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot and was discharged in 1946. He was an honorary Kentucky Colonel and an honorary Kentucky Admiral. He was a son of the late August Smingler and Lena Spalding Smingler and the husband of the late Teresa Paterson Smingler.
Memorial service will be at a later date in Syracuse. Hardy & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Smingler; a daughter, Deborah Shuryn and her husband, Joseph, of Palmyra, N.Y.; three sons, Peter Smingler and his wife, Yolanda, of Alexandria, Va., Brian Smingler and his wife, Judith, of Smiths Grove and Colin Smingler of Rochester, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepdaughters and a stepson of Aberdeen.
