Kirby given Ky. Scholars scholarshipLindsay Paige Kirby, daughter of Tommy and Lisa Kirby, received a Kentucky Scholars Scholarship and plans to major in accounting at Western Kentucky University. Furlong awarded honor for leadershipKaren Furlong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Furlong of Smiths Grove, has been named a United States National Award Winner in leadership. Furlong, who attends Warren East High School, was nominated for the award by Bill Utley, a counselor at the school. She will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook. She is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Meeks and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Furlong, all of Smiths Grove. Three local students graduate MurrayElizabeth Bozarth and Seth Frank, both of Bowling Green, and Geoffrey Deaton of Smiths Grove are among the class of 2003 graduation candidates at Murray State University. Graduation will be May 10.Bozarth will receives a master of science degree. Frank will receive a bachelor of science degree, and Deaton will receive a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. Two schools set SBDM council timesRichardsville Elementary School Site-Based Decision-Making Council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school. L.C. Curry Elementary School Site-Based Decision-Making Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. today at the school. Western jounalists place third in HearstFor the fifth straight year, Western Kentucky Universitys School of Journalism and Broadcasting has placed in the top three nationally in Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Western finished third overall in the 43rd annual Hearst competition, often called the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism. Western won the title in 2000 and 2001, was second in 2002 and third in 1999.The Hearst Journalism Awards Program includes writing, broadcasting and photography competitions. Northwestern won the overall competition, followed by North Carolina, Western Kentucky, Penn State, Syracuse, Arizona State, Montana, Florida, San Jose State and Missouri. Western will receive a $2,500 award. Western won the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition, was seventh in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition and finished eighth in the Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition. In the competitions final writing contest, Rex Hall Jr., a Louisville senior, placed 13th in spot news writing. WKUs Ryan Clark of Louisville won the Hearst feature writing contest and will compete in the national writing championships in June in San Francisco. Five WKU photojournalism students are among 12 national semifinalists who will submit additional photos for judging. Six finalists will compete for national honors June 2 through 8 in San Francisco. The photo semifinalists are: Shannon Guthrie, a Bowling Green senior; Lauren Clifton, a Shelbyville senior; Brett Flashnick, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C.; Amanda Odeski, a Dallas senior; and Brian Wagner, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn. Thomas named an art award winnerAlana Thomas, daughter of Kevin and Felicia Thomas of Bowling Green, has been named a United States National Award Winner in art. Thomas, who attends Drakes Creek Middle School, was nominated for the award by Susan B. Roberts, a teacher at the school. She will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published nationally. Thomas is a granddaughter of Charles and Peggy Barton of Lewisburg and Paul and Lenora Hollinger of Lake City, Fla. Sumitomo gives three students scholarshipsAshley Dockery, a senior at Butler County High School; James Farris, a senior at Allen County-Scottsville High School; and Bridgett Rich, a senior at Edmonson County High School, are among the recipients of 2003 Spirit of Education Scholarships from Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems Inc. The scholarship program was created in 1997 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of Sumitomo. The scholarships provide one-time awards of at least $1,000 to children of associates planning to attend an accredited college, university or vocational school. Sen. Guthrie picked to be at-large repSen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, will be an at-large representative to the Strategic Committee on Postsecondary Education. Guthrie, who was appointed by Sen. President David Williams, R-Burkesville, is a member of the Senates education committee and worked to come up with a funding solution for primary and secondary education during the budget process this year. Since I was first elected, improving education has been one of my goals, Guthrie said. This position will allow me to look at funding for higher education and emphasize high achievement and accountability. SCOPE helps determine goals for higher education and provides advice and guidance to the Council on Postsecondary Education. Middle-schooler named in award bookMichael Ray Powers, son of Wayne and Mary-Anne Powers of Bowling Green, has been named a United States National Award Winner in Art. Powers, who attends Drakes Creek Middle School, was nominated for the award by Susan Roberts, his art teacher. He will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook that is published annually. Powers is the grandson of Roy and Lib Cossey and George and Barbara Powers, all of Bowling Green. Western awards five local scholarships Five high school seniors from Warren County have received scholarships to attend Western Kentucky University. Warren East High Schools Morgan Brooks, daughter of Michael and Martha Brooks, received a Smiths Grove Womens Club Scholarship and plans to major in elementary education. Greenwood High Schools Lou Anne Kirby, daughter of Wayne and Jane Kirby, received a Presidential Scholarship and plans to major in engineering. Greenwoods Jonathan Lawrence Merkling, son of Sherry Merkling and Jim Merkling, received a Regents Scholarship and plans to major in graphic design. Warren Central High Schools Jon M. Whitaker, son of James Mike and Janet Whitaker, received a Pace-Blakey Scholarship and plans to major in civil engineering. Bowling Green High Schools Jessica Wright, daughter of Jerry and Jeanie Wright, received an Alliance Leadership Scholarship and plans to major in international business and music.
