Raising cigarette tax is easy to rationalize

I read with amusement Sherry Grahams recent letter (Raising cigarette tax would help economy, Daily News, Feb. 12) stating that raising the cigarette tax would help. Its always easy to rationalize raising taxes for a group that you are not a part of and when it doesnt cost you anything. Personally, I think we should raise the taxes on big screen televisions; I dont have one of those. How about imposing a special luxury tax on homes valued over $600,000; I dont have one of those, either. Or maybe we can tax pigs; I dont have one of those. Or, maybe golf bags … If we really have to, maybe we should do what is most fair to the greatest numbers and not penalize a select group. Maybe a small bump in the sales tax is in order. Those who earn less typically spend less. Those who earn more, and can generally afford it, buy more. Sounds fair to me. Don FrusherBowling Green
