Anderson, Martin earn C-USA weekly honors
Western Kentucky volleyball players Rachel Anderson and Mary Martin earned recognition from Conference USA on Monday for their performances in their final home matches.
Anderson earned her third Offensive Player of the Week award of the season, while Martin collected her first-ever Setter of the Week accolade.
WKU has seen multiple players recognized with awards four times in the 2018 campaign, as six different Lady Toppers have combined for nine C-USA weekly honors.
In her final weekend of volleyball at E.A. Diddle Arena, Anderson posted outings of 15 and 18 kills for a total of 33 across nine sets. Not only did Anderson strike often, she worked at a .400 hitting rate with just nine errors on 60 swings.
Anderson was just as impressive defensively, racking up six solo blocks and nine block assists to average 1.67 blocks per set. The senior chipped in four digs, an assist and an ace – served up as the final point she’ll ever play at Diddle Arena. Anderson finished with 44.5 points over the weekend, as the Lady Toppers won their third and fourth straight matches.
Anderson nearly posted a double-double outing in Friday’s win over Florida International with 18 kills and eight blocks before putting up similar numbers Sunday with 15 kills and seven blocks in a four-set win over second-place Florida Atlantic. For the second week in a row, the Sturgis, Mich., native tallied 44.5 points for the Red and White across a pair of victories.
After not playing in the four previous matches, WKU senior setter Martin earned a start in her senior day match against FAU and delivered one of the best performances of her career on The Hill. The Lexington native racked up 47 assists in the four-set victory over the Owls as the Lady Toppers outhit the league’s top offensive squad with a .264 efficiency.
In the match, the WKU offense found the floor for a kill on 48.5 percent of Martin’s sets. The senior registered her first double-double of the season and the second of her career with 11 digs in the outing as well. Martin also added three kills, a block and an ace in WKU’s senior day win, while averaging 11.75 assists per set, 2.75 digs per set and 1.12 points per set.
Martin’s award marks the first time since the 2015 campaign that two different setters from the same team earned a Setter of the Week nod from Conference USA in the same season. Taylor Bebout also collected a pair of awards this season.
