The Wishbone Ranch Summer Celebration

The Wishbone Ranch will be holding their Summer Celebration July 17 & 18.  The event is one of several annual events at the OHV park for rockcrawlers.  The ranch boasts 110 acres of trails  and obstacles of varying difficulty.  The description of events on their website beckons, “Come to trail ride and watch the more extreme drivers or better yet come to play hard. Tall rock ledges and steep climbs are sure to put your 4×4 to the test; expect body damage on more difficult obstacles.”

Lyn Wilson and Myra Phelps, the proprieters of The Wishbone Ranch are both rockcrawling enthusiasts.  Myra said ” We love the activity of being outdoors and being able to go when you want to get away from civilization.  The thrill of rock crawling itself is a blast.”   When asked what drew him to the activity, Lyn replied, “Conquering hard trails and the rush of knowing you have accomplished this when you get to the top.”

OHVs or Off Highway Vehicles are land vehicles used for recreational purposes and can include: All terrain vehicles (ATVs), off road motorcycles or dirt bikes, snow mobiles and four wheel drive vehicles such as jeeps and trucks.  Dirt bikes and off road motorcycles are not permitted at the Wishbone Ranch, only “full-sized OHVs, ‘Rigs’, ‘Buggys’, Rockcrawlers, Trucks and Modified and Unmodified Jeeps”, according to their site.

Rock crawling is a specific type of off road driving where enthusiasts use trucks, jeeps, buggies and other four wheel drive vehicles to climb rocky terrains such as mountainous trails and rock piles.  The techniques to accomplish navigating seemingly impassable obstacles involve slow, precise driving and high torque.  Wishbone’s obstacles include: Axle Hill, Wizzo Hill, Brock’s Rock, Gimme Three Steps, Snot Rock, The Rock House, The Dragon’s Trail and The Blackhole.  Each of these offers a unique challenge in the form of rock, carved earth or water.  Other trails are less daunting for the newcomer or amatuer.

Use of The Wishbone Ranch trails is limited to several events each year.  Facilities include bathrooms, primative camping and a limited number of RV hookups.  All drivers and riders must sign a waiver each year.  There is no cost to participate, however donations are accepted and used to maintain the facilities.  Donations can take the form of cash or supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, plastic utensils, disposable cups, trash bags and aluminum foil or items for fundraising auctions. The ranch is a family friendly environment.
