Greenwood boys secure 7th straight region title ahead of finals

Both of Greenwood’s boys’ doubles teams played with their own proverbial chip on the shoulder.

Landon Gann and Parker Young have been on a mission all season to make a return to the Region 4 tennis championship match. Will Parks and Dylan Dethridge remembered a tightly contested match against Bowling Green two weeks ago and exerted everything they had to prevent a similar outcome.

Both teams’ efforts, in a grander scheme, will ensure Greenwood yet another team championship. Gann/Young and Parks/Dethridge will make it an all-Gators final in boys’ doubles and Greenwood freshman Jacks Lancaster will try to three-peat as the individual boys’ region champion.

All but one competitor – Bowling Green’s John Guthrie – will represent Greenwood in the Region 4 boys’ tournament final Wednesday afternoon at Kereakies Park. The Gators have locked up their seventh-straight boys’ region title after a strong showing in the quarterfinals and semifinals Monday.

“Coming into this we had some key matches and to keep the tradition going we knew we had to win,” Dethridge said. “So, this match locked it up and it feels great to keep it going.”

Greenwood’s 14 points in the team standings secured its seventh-straight region title. Bowling Green will finish runner-up with 11 points.

Dethridge/Parks put on a show against Bowling Green’s Ronit Patel and Tate Sine. The Greenwood duo fought back from a three-game deficit in the first set to win 7-5 and the second set 6-2. Patel was the reigning doubles champion in the region with Amrit Avula, who graduated last year, by defeating the Gann/Young pair.

But Gann/Young earned the tournament’s top seed and didn’t drop one set on their way to the region final. They defeated South Warren’s Hunter Armstrong and Owen Logsdon 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals to set up a doubles championship against their teammates.

“After the hard loss last year we had unfinished business and that’s what pushed us this past year was to prove who is really the best doubles team in the region,” Young said. “Hopefully that’s what we prove on Wednesday.”

Regardless of the outcome, all finals participants advance to the KHSAA Tennis State Tournament May 30-June 1 at the University of Kentucky’s Boone Tennis Center in Lexington.

Parks and Dethridge lost to the Patel/Sine team two weeks ago in a match that went to a third-set tiebreaker. They fell behind early in the first set, down 3-0 and 5-3 before the rally. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Parks/Dethridge controlled the second set to beat the third-seeded pair from Bowling Green.

“We just thought about the last match and didn’t want to feel the same way and wanted to clutch up and win region tonight,” Parks said. “It’s a great feeling. Last year we lost to them when it was Ronit and (Avula). For us to beat them this year felt so good and we’re going to be able to play our teammates in the final.”

Lancaster will try to three-peat as the boys’ individual champion in another regional final against Guthrie in a match featuring two of the best in Kentucky.

As an eighth-grader last year, Lancaster defeated Guthrie 6-2, 7-5 in the championship game. The Greenwood freshman is ranked as the top player in the state according to Tennis Recruiting Network and Guthrie, a Purples sophomore, is No. 6 in the same rankings.

Lancaster hasn’t lost a game in six sets leading to the final and Guthrie has dropped three games. Guthrie defeated Glasgow’s Nick Morosa 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals and Lancaster swept Glasgow’s Kenyu Goto.

“It’s good to have two really good players in the championship,” Guthrie said. “It’s been a really good year of training and I’m just excited to let the work show and I want to play good tennis Wednesday.”

Lancaster and Guthrie haven’t played one another since that region final last year also hosted at Kereiakes Park. Lancaster likes the idea of winning a third-straight region title, but said he’s not stressing over it.

“It would be something cool to do and even if I don’t, it’s fine,” Lancaster said. “As long as I’m having fun.”

GIRLS

Sydney Cassady and Natalie Noble breezed through the quarterfinals and semifinals to go for their fourth-straight Region 4 doubles crown.

The seniors from South Warren dropped one game in their last two rounds combined – sweeping Metcalfe County’s Gabby Devore and Kylee Coleman before dropping just one game against Logan County’s Lauren Barnes and Kara Noffsinger in the semifinals.

The three-time defending region champions will play Greenwood’s Christie Lin and Kate Young in the final. Lin/Young defeated Allen County-Scottsville’s Taylor Carter and Abby Stamps 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 in the semifinals.

Greenwood’s Greer Glosick advanced to the girls’ singles final by an injury default in the semifinals. As the No. 2 seed, Glosick will play top-seed Konnor Gallagher, from Metcalfe County, in the finals Wednesday at Kereiakes Park.

The Greenwood girls’ team has 11 points in the team standings with Metcalfe County and South Warren tied for second with nine points.
