Hot Rods fall 4-3 in 10 innings to host Whitecaps
The Bowling Green Hot Rods dropped a 4-3 decision in 10 innings to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday in Lansing, Mich.
A night after being shut out by the Whitecaps, the Hot Rods nearly put together their best comeback of the season against the team with the best home record in the Midwest League.
Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Hot Rods cranked out five hits during the inning against the White Caps’ Eudis Idrogo. A three-run homer by outfielder Emilio Gustave gave the Hot Rods a 3-2 lead.
For Gustave, the homer marked his first hit in for the Hot Rods in three games played. He finished the night 3-for-5 at the plate, pacing the Hot Rods’ offensive attack that had 10 hits.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, West Michigan shortstop Danny Pinero came through with a RBI single to bring in Josh Lester from second to tie up the game.
A bases-loaded RBI single by White Caps first basemen Blaise Salter against Bowling Green’s Brian McAfee plated second basemen Anthony Pereiera to give the Whitecaps the walk-off victory.
Salter paced the Whitecaps’ offense with a 3-for-5 night at the plate.
On the pitching side, the Hot Rods got another quality start from lefty Brock Burke. The 20-year-old southpaw tossed six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits. He has now given up one earned run or fewer in each of his seven starts this year.
The Hot Rods will continue their week on the road Wednesday with the finale of a three-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Bowling Green will send LHP Travis Ott to the mound, while the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Alfred Gutierrez.
First pitch is scheduled for noon CDT.
