Purples sweep Warren East to close district play
Losing two out of three for Bowling Green is uncommon ground. What the Purples learned in the last week was worth a pair of notches in the loss column.
Bowling Green took a few of those lessons to heart and used them to steamroll Warren East 84-50 on Friday.
Factoring roster changes and losses in the last week to John Hardin and Owensboro, the Purples (21-5 overall, 7-1 District 14) were able to enjoy an easy night, led by 22 first-half points from Isaiah Mason and 10 points from Kolbe Gray. The Purples had 14 players score on a night Warren East inducted its latest athletic Hall of Fame class.
“Had a lot of energy and a lot of guys contribute,” BGHS coach Derrick Clubb said. “Those are good games and sometimes you need that. We got to get back in the gym and work on things that we let slip a bit as a coaching staff. I thought tonight we were sharper defensively, communication was better and I could go on and on.
“I’m really proud of the guys because they’ve had a good two days of practice and it showed out there.”
Bowling Green put on a shooting clinic in the first half. The Purples pulled away quickly with a 13-2 run, powered by Mason, sparking a 20-8 lead.
Mason kept his hot hand going with back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second quarter. Barber willed Warren East with a quick burst that cut the deficit to 10 points, but Mason kept rolling.
He made his next two 3-point attempts and Kolbe Gray added a triple to make it 39-20. Mason finished the first half with 22 points and six 3-pointers.
“Warmups helped me get in the flow of my shots and my teammates created those open shots for me and I just knocked them down,” Mason said.
Bowling Green opened the second half with an 11-0 run to blow the game open. Back-to-back layups from Conner Cooper spread it to a 35-point game midway through the quarter to start a running clock.
Bowling Green, the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 14 Tournament, has now won 50 straight over Warren East dating back to 1998.
“We have a very special team and we play with each other,” Mason said. “We just have to come in every day and work. We have a mission to complete.”
Raiders senior Adante Barber had 10 points in the first half to lead Warren East (10-15, 0-8), which finishes the regular season winless in the district.
“We’re young and just waiting on district and South Warren in the first round,” Barber said. “We’re still struggling and trying to work hard in practice every day and keep working. Stick with the game plan from the beginning.”
Warren East closes the regular season with home games against Caverna and Franklin-Simpson before ending the year at Monroe County on Feb. 14. Bowling Green will host Russellville on Tuesday before closing the year at Hopkinsville on Feb. 15.

GIRLS
Bowling Green 67, Warren East 42
The Lady Purples overcame early turnovers and settled down to roll by Warren East 67-42 on Friday.
A 16-2 run in the first half and a 14-0 burst in the third quarter helped Bowling Green (20-6 overall, 8-1 District 14) cruise with three players scoring double digits.
The Lady Raiders (11-14, 3-6) took a brief lead in the second quarter before Bowling Green stormed ahead for good.
“We turned the ball over way too much and playing a little sloppy,” BGHS coach Calvin Head said. “Once we started taking care of the basketball and got our defense set, we were able to speed the game up, get out in transition and get some easy buckets. That’s what we want to do down the stretch.”
Keyozdon Jones led Bowling Green with 18 points and T’Alla Brown added 16 points.
A regular-season split between Bowling Green and South Warren means a coin toss Monday will determine the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 14 Tournament. With Greenwood’s loss to Warren Central on Friday, Warren East will be the three-seed in the tournament.
Bowling Green got off to a rocky start with six turnovers that kept Warren East within 11-8 after one quarter. The Lady Raiders moved into a 15-14 lead with Kelsey Sparks’ free throw with 5:09 left in the half.
Then Bowling Green went on a tear. The Lady Purples scored 10 points off Warren East turnovers during a 16-2 run to end the first half. Bowling Green scored 10 unanswered to enter the locker room with a 30-17 lead.
The Purples kept up the pressure by doubling the lead in the third quarter with a 14-0 run. Lucy Patterson led Warren East with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Purples will play Graves County Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Independence Bank Valentine’s Shootout at Murray. Warren East will host Caverna on Monday.
