CD Review: Momentary Sigh of Weakness by Victor Beach
When one listens to much of the privately and even much of the studio produced music nowadays one is struck by the overwhelming mediocrity and lack of originality in the lyrics, musical style and overall presentation. Listening to it becomes a painful tedious experience akin to being trapped in an elevator with some dreadful MUZAK playing. When I first put Vic Beach’s Momentary Sign of Weakness into my car’s CD player after receiving it to review I was frankly dreading what would emerge. To my surprise and delight m what emerged was a tight, funky, rocking mixture of very listenable tunes.
Beach a life-long drummer and native of Ft. Thomas, KY went to WKU and became a part of the local music scene in the famous Bowling Green band Kaleidoscope with members John Carpenter, Tommy Wallace (yes, the two of horror movie fame), Gary Huff and Tim Hulsey. From there he became a part of another Bowling Green musical institution Slickrock and later in the bands Thumbs, Juice and Nightwork. Beach now lives in Nashville and fronts his own band, the Victor Beach Experience who is responsible for “Momentary Sign of Weakness.”
The music in “Momentary Sign of Weakness” brings in well-written lyrics, and a musical pace that keeps you interested in the music and to hear what come next. As an example, the title song varies its tempo from a reggae to rock that is infectious. The vocals are, while not technically powerful or dominant add the perfect complement to the music.
Vic Beach is a perfect example of the quality that experience can bring to music and that age is certainly no barrier to being able to rock. “Momentary Sign of Weakness” while only seven songs, will keep your feet tapping and have you waiting with anticipation for Vic Beach’s next release. You can find this CD on CDBABY.com or from Vic on his website. Either way, you will not waste your money on this one.
