VA clinic to provide free clothes to veterans

Friday, the Bowling Green Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic will have a “free shopping day” for veterans in need of clothes.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Veterans Day, veterans in need can come to the clinic and pick up the clothes they need, according to a news release from the clinic.

Michelle Mudd, a licensed practical nurse at the clinic, said the donations over the month of October have probably exceeded the amount of clothes donated for the clinic’s first free shopping day, hosted in July, four times over.

“It has been wonderful, the donations,” she said. “We have had an abundance of items come in.”

With winter approaching, Mudd said she was happy the clinic has received plenty of coats and shoes.

“It’s really overwhelming and I’m really pleased with what we’re getting in,” she said.

The clinic will have clothes and shoes of different sizes, as well as packaged socks and underwear.

Because of the large amount of clothes that have been collected, there will be no limit to how many items veterans can leave with, Mudd said.

“This time we’re allowing veterans and their families to shop,” she said, though she added they don’t have many children’s items.

Each veteran must bring either a valid ID or DD-214 discharge papers to prove their veteran status.
