Police News: BG man is victim of telephone scam

A Bowling Green man fell victim to an international telephone scam Friday when someone called his home and told him that his grandson had been arrested for marijuana possession in Mexico City and instructed the man to send $3,400 for the young man’s bond.

The man, who lives in the 1800 block of Westen Avenue, sent $3,400 via Western Union to Mexico City. He was instructed to call a man who identified himself as “Mr. Riley.” The man called “Mr. Riley,” who told him to send more money to get his grandson out of jail.

At that time, the Bowling Green man called his daughter-in-law, who informed him that his grandson was not in Mexico City and was in fact at home.

The number the Bowling Green man called was out of Canada. Police told the man that resolution to the case is limited due to the parties being outside of the country.

Assault — When the Bowling Green Police Department responded to a fight call July 21, it found a badly beaten woman inside her Stonehenge Avenue apartment, according to city police records.

The woman had head injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma. Her assailant also knocked out all of the windows in her car and smashed her computer monitor and smartphone, city police records said.

An electronic warrant has been issued for the arrest of a suspect, whose name was redacted from police records.

Drug arrests — Warren County sheriff’s deputies arrested Robert Neighbors, 39, Jeffery Glass, 39, and Melissa Drye, 23, all of Bowling Green, on Saturday after responding to a drug tip at 6130 Penns Chapel Road, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Upon arrival, both deputies could smell the heavy odor of ether coming from the trailer, the release said. Neighbors granted deputies permission to search the home and showed them a meth lab in the bathroom, the release said.

All three are charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia-delivery/manufacture.

The Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force was called in to dismantle the lab.

All three are lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail, where their bonds are set at $5,000 cash each, according to online jail records. They are scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday.

Burglary — A homeowner at 1375 Rapids Road in Franklin saw four people attempting to enter his barn Monday afternoon to steal metal items, according to a release from the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office.

The homeowner confronted the would-be thieves, who ran away as the homeowner tried to chase them. The suspects left in a vehicle that almost hit the homeowner, the release said.

Franklin Police Department Officer Kelly Mayfield intercepted the vehicle on U.S. 31-W.

Joseph Shane Stephens, 21, address unknown; Paul F. Johnson, 24, 1286 Salmons Blackjack Road; Patrick Johnson, 21, 1286 Salmons Blackjack Road; and Travis Bingham, 28, 207 Molly Ave., all of Franklin, were charged with third-degree burglary. Bingham was additionally charged with wanton endangerment because he was the driver of the vehicle, according to the release.

Bond information was not available at press time.
