Hawks wins gold for USA Baseball
Warren East senior Ryan Hawks signed with Louisville in November and added a gold medal to his resume in December.
The Raiders’ ace pitcher assisted the USA Baseball 18U team to an undefeated tournament run to win the COPABE U-18 Pan-American Championship on Sunday in Panama.
Hawks pitched two innings of relief and allowed one hit in Team USA’s 17-2 win over host Panama in the championship game Sunday.
Hawks faced eight batters, recorded one strikeout and gave up a single run on 25 pitches. The Louisville signee saw action in three games during the tournament that started Nov. 23.
His biggest game came against Panama in the super round, where he recorded the win in five innings of action. Hawks struck out two and allowed four runs on seven hits as Team USA held on for the 9-8 win.
In the opening round against Peru on Nov. 24, Hawks retired three batters in one inning of work.
Hawks was selected to the 20-man USA Baseball junior championship team in November after making the 43-player roster for the USA Baseball trials over the summer in Cary, N.C. The 6-foot-3 righty was named 2018 Gatorade Kentucky Baseball Player of the Year in May after posting an 8-0 record and a 1.17 earned run average as a junior for Warren East.{&end}
