Mark Johnson benefit concert September 11

On September 11, 10 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. regional musicians will come together to celebrate the life of Mark Johnson and provide aid for his family in their time of need.  Johnson, who unexpectedly passed away in July was a long time fixture in the local music scene.

At age 17 he was mentored by event organizer Steve Sanders who taught him to play music.  Mark served as lightman for Sanders’ group Shock in the early 80’s then went on to play bass on the road for Tim Marshall and later Gordy Deems.  In the late 80’s and early 90’s he performed with local bands such as Redrum, Ripper, The Naked Mole Rats, Dick’s Hatband, BluesBerry Jam, Mudbone Reflex and Skywalker.

In more recent years Mark’s love of the blues was explored in notable groups Chuck Wells & Stone Cold Blues, Hard Knocks and the Fender Benders.  He appeared three times in Memphis representing two local bands for the Kentucky Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge.  Mark served as promoter and point of contact for the Fender Benders and largely due to his efforts the group began a recording which would lead to their being signed – news that would unfortunatley come the day of his funeral.  Johnson will appear on their debut album on every song and 100 numbered copies of a special pre-release version will be available at the benefit.

The benefit will take place at 1348 Rocky Hill Rd. in Glasgow and will be broadcast live on the Mo and Beck show across the country.  Featured bands at the event will include: Andy & the Rockers, John King & Southbound, Nine Horse Johnson, Uncle Pecos, Fat Mouth Mojo, Otis, Michael Gough & John Martin, Fender Benders and HardKnocks.  A rain date is set for September 18.
