Community Ed’s Stand for Children Day kicks off this week

Face painting, karate and an obstacle course are just a few examples of the fun and games coming to Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday for this year’s Stand for Children Day celebration.

The free event put on by Community Education every year is more than fun and games for Joshua Smith, the local nonprofit’s volunteer and outreach coordinator.

“There’s also that learning piece to it,” Smith said, adding it’s an opportunity to raise awareness about issues that affect children.

At this year’s Stand for Children Day, kids can try out musical instruments in an “instrument petting zoo,” view ballet demonstrations, learn CPR in hands-on lessons and learn about how sugar can harm their teeth, among other activities.

“You never know what’s going to intrigue children,” Smith said. The event runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Each year, Stand for Children Day brings together community organizations and businesses to celebrate children by offering activities and information. Community Education has recruited about 65 vendors for this year’s event, and guests can pick up a free drawstring backpack, while supplies last, to carry their goodies.

This year’s celebration kicks off Monday with a ribbon-cutting with American Bank and Trust, the Kiwanis Club of Bowling Green and WellCare Health Plans from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Club Room at the ballpark.

Now in its 22nd year, Smith said Stand for Children Day is “growing each year and still continues to grow.” It began several years ago at the Lovers Lane Soccer Complex, then moved to Western Kentucky University’s South Lawn before finally moving to Bowling Green Ballpark. Smith expects Tuesday’s event to draw about 750 children.
