WKU Libraries hosting 3 speakers for October lectures

WKU Libraries’ Kentucky Live and Far Away Places lecture series will be bringing the following three speakers to the area this month:

  • At 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Barnes & Noble Bookstore (1680 Campbell Lane), Chef Albert Schmid, Professor and Chair, Beverage Management, Hotel-Restaurant Management and Hospitality Management Departments at Louisville’s Sullivan University, will be presenting a talk on Culinary Tourism.  A Le Cordon Bleu Master’s graduate from the University of Adelaide, Schmid is the author of The Hospitality Manager’s Guide to Wine, Beers and Spirits and The Kentucky Bourbon Cookbook.  He coached Sullivan’s gold medal winning culinary teams and has won awards for ice carving and his work with chocolate. He’ll be signing copies of his “cookbook” after his presentation.
  • On Oct. 19, Dr. John Hale, Director of Liberal Studies from the University of Louisville, will be doing a discussion on Discoveries Underwater in the Mediterranean at Barnes & Noble at 7 p.m. An accomplished instructor, Dr. Hale is also an archaeologist with more than 30 years of fieldwork experience. He has excavated at a Romano-British town in Lincolnshire, England, and at the Roman Villa of Torre de Palma in Portugal. He has also carried out interdisciplinary studies of ancient oracle sites in Greece and Turkey, including the famous Delphic Oracle, and participated in an undersea search in Greek waters for lost fleets from the time of the Persian Wars. He’s been profiled on NPR and the New York Times and his fieldwork has been featured on the Discovery and History channels. Following his presentation, he’ll be signing copies of his book Lords of the Sea: The Epic Story of the Athenian Navy and the Birth of Democracy.
  • On Oct. 28, Nancy Richey, Faculty for Department of Library Special Collections at WKU, will be discussing her new book, Images of America: Barren County at the WKU-Glasgow Campus Library at 7 p.m. Richey is a native of Mt. Hermon and developed her love of history from her father. A graduate of WKU and the University of Kentucky, Richey is the Reference and Image Librarian at the Kentucky Library & Museum. She’s a board member of the Janice Holt Giles Historical Society where she acts as a docent at the Kentucky author’s home now a museum near Columbia. Following her presentation, there will be a book signing and reception.
