WKU’s Taylor, Simcox garner national awards
Western Kentucky senior wide receiver Taywan Taylor and kicker Skyler Simcox garnered national attention for their performances in the team’s 44-43 double-overtime victory over rival Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
Taylor earned Offensive Senior of the Week honors from the Reese’s Senior Bowl, while Simcox was named a Lou Groza Award Star of the Week. It’s the first such recognition for each Hilltopper, while Simcox was also Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
Taylor tied a career-high with 12 catches and set a career-high with 197 receiving yards. He also grabbed a 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike White in the second quarter to put WKU ahead. It was Taylor’s fifth effort of 110-plus receiving yards this season, making him one of only three players in the country to accomplish that feat. For his decorated career, Taylor has 15 100-plus receiving yard games, including in 13 of his last 19.
Simcox, meanwhile, had a career-high 14 points scored, including three field goals that all tied the score for the Hilltoppers throughout the game. His 52-yard boot to end the first half was the longest of his career and tied for the third-longest made attempt in program history. His 18-yard field goal from the 1/2-yard line sent the contest into overtime, and his fifth extra point of the day gave WKU the victory in double overtime.
The 2017 Senior Bowl will be held in Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 28. Taylor, linebacker Keith Brown and offensive lineman Forrest Lamp are currently on the game’s Watch List, hoping to earn spots on the 110-player roster. The Lou Groza Award is presented each year to the nation’s top place kicker. A list of semifinalists will be released Nov. 3, with the honoree ultimately being recognized Dec. 8 on ESPN.
Taylor, Simcox and the Hilltoppers (4-3, 2-1) host C-USA opponent Old Dominion (4-2, 2-0) on Saturday at Houchens-Smith Stadium for WKU Homecoming 2016. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m., with the game being broadcast on American Sports Network (ASN).
