Car fleeing police hits tree, killing infant

A vehicle fleeing from law enforcement struck a tree in Edmonson County, resulting in injuries for its two adult occupants and the death of an infant passenger.

At 11:44 p.m. Friday, the Kentucky State Police received a call for service from the Barren County Sheriff’s Department, requesting assistance with a fatal crash that had occurred just over the Edmonson County line near Rocky Hill.

According to a release from KSP, Barren County deputy sheriff James Roberts saw a blue 1998 Toyota Camry driving recklessly near Apple Grove Road and Park City-Bon Ayr Road.

When Roberts turned on his emergency equipment, the Camry accelerated onto Apple Grove Road, causing Roberts to lose sight of it. Shortly thereafter, Roberts crossed into Edmonson County and found the vehicle motionless in the middle of the road.

The Camry’s driver, James E. Settles, 54, of Glasgow, was thrown from the car when it struck a tree.

He was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Passenger Ruth Clemmons, 43, of Etoile, was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital via ambulance and was listed in critical condition. The Edmonson County Coroner’s Office pronounced Clemmons’ 4-month-old son Lucas Settles dead.

The Edmonson County Sheriff’s Department disposed of an active meth lab that was found on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing under the leadership of KSP Sgt. Joshua Cummings, according to the release.
