Geroux wins two on Turf Cup Day at Kentucky Downs

FRANKLIN – It was a big day for jockey Florent Geroux, who had two firsts and two seconds in stakes races during Saturday’s Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup Day at Kentucky Downs.

Geroux rode Ruby Notion to the win in the Ladies Sprint, then capped the day with a victory aboard Arklow in the feature race, the 1½-mile Kentucky Turf Cup.

“It was a great day, but you always want more,” Geroux said.

Arklow started in the back early, but rallied in the stretch to edge past Soglio and then hold off Bigger Picture by a half-length in 2:30.56.

“He’s a big horse, very long stride and very good mover, Geroux said. “Sometimes he’s been a bit of a disappointment because we’ve always thought he has more in him. Today he was in against some very nice horses, Grade 1-winning horses and graded-stakes horses, and he beat them fairly and squarely.”

Defending champion Oscar Nominated never was a factor, finishing fifth in the 12-horse field.

In the Ladies Sprint, Notion edged defending champion Lull at the wire by a neck in a thrilling three-way battle to the finish that included Brielle’s Appeal.

Coming off a win in the Caress Stakes at Saratoga on July 23, Ruby Notion stayed close to the pace before coming up between horses to claim the win.

“We thought we got lucky last time with the rain, but she showed today she was just as good on the turf,” Geroux said.

Brielle’s Appeal, who held the lead going into the stretch, finished third by a nose.

Geroux nearly made it four out of five wins in stakes races, but settled for second-place finishes in the Ladies Turf and Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Insta Erma, ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, closed strong to take the one-mile Ladies Turf. Insta Erma started in the back and made her move in the stretch to pull past Valadoma, ridden by Geroux, by a neck.

“I was being patient with her,” Van Dyke said. “It’s a long stretch. I felt I had a lot of horse underneath me and I was waiting for the right time, thought that was the key to asking.”

Pas de Soucia finished third.

Favorite Moonlight Romance, ridden by Jose Ortiz, won the 6½-furlong Juvenile Turf Sprint.

“It was perfect,” Ortiz said. “She broke good. She was on the lead for a little bit, then the 4 horse rushed through it. I just sat off her a little bit, when I was ready to make my move, she was there for me the entire time.”

The race featured a scary incident involving Chattel and jockey Kendrick Carmouche, with the horse going down after bumping with Sovereign Impact just past the quarter pole.

Carmouche suffered a leg injury and was taken to Skyline Trauma Center in Nashville for further observations. Chattel fractured his right shoulder and was euthanized.

Sovereign Impact originally finished third but was disqualified and placed ninth.

Life Mission, ridden by Geroux, finished second with Blame the Frog moving up to third as a result of Sovereign Impact’s disqualification.

In the 6½-furlong Turf Sprint, Proforma, ridden by Joe Bravo, edged favorite White Flag by a head – winning in a course record time of 1:15.72.

“I was really happy about this horse coming over here today,” Bravo said. “I saw the whole race setting up nice. It unfolded really well until the eighth pole. You think, ‘Great. We break loose from everybody and you are going to explode.’ Then you look over and see (White Flag) running and you really didn’t know until the photo. Both horses laid it on the line. It was a lot of fun.”

Vici finished third.

Live racing continues Sunday at Kentucky Downs with a 10-race card. Post time for the first race is scheduled for 1:25 p.m.{&end}
