Hot Rods learning from lengthy road trip

One week down, one week to go for the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

Bowling Green is in the midst of a franchise-high 13-game road trip, a trek that spans four cities and three states in 14 days.

The Hot Rods went 4-2 during the opening stretch of the road trip, sweeping Fort Wayne (Ind.) before going 1-2 at Great Lakes (Mich.). Bowling Green will play three at South Bend (Ind.) starting Tuesday before completing the road trip with four against Lake County (Ohio). The Hot Rods will also complete a game suspended by rain in April during the Lake County series.

Bowling Green manager Reinaldo Ruiz said he likes how his team has approached the trip through the first week.

“So far we are OK,” Ruiz said. “We feel fine. I think we are going to be all right. Let’s see how it goes the next week, the next two series.”

Several players have enjoyed big performances so far on the trip. Infielder Robbie Tenerowicz has three home runs and four RBIs. Left-handed starting pitcher Brock Burke continued his strong start to the season with six shutout innings and a career-high 10 strikeouts in a win at Great Lakes.

Ruiz also praised the bullpen for its performance during the trip.

“It is a very challenging road trip for everybody,” Ruiz said. “I think because we already have more than 50 games under our belt we are going to be fine. We learned a lot being together these last 50 games and I think we are going to be fine. The kids are getting stronger and learning a lot.”

There was one bright spot in the trip, with the team getting an off day in South Bend on Monday.

“It’s huge for us,” Ruiz said. “We haven’t had any true off days because we have to travel. This is the first off day where we will be in the same place all day. Hopefully we are going to be re-energized and go out and finish the road trip on a positive note.”

With 15 games left in the first half, the Hot Rods’ playoff chances are slim at best. Bowling Green is 26-29 and in sixth place in the Midwest League Eastern Division. West Michigan (38-18) and Dayton (Ohio) (36-20) currently lead the way in the division.

Ruiz said he is hopeful a strong trip can be the springboard into a strong second half.

“If we can finish this road trip with a positive record, it would be a good test to see how prepared we are going to be for the second half,” Ruiz said. “The first half is going to be tough because Dayton and West Michigan are playing really well.

“It’s going to be tough to catch up with them, but I think it would be a good test to see how we finish this road trip and the first half and address the second half.”
