Zombie run to benefit Humane Society

On Saturday, zombies will overrun Phil Moore Park.

The 5K Zombie Run to benefit the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with registration beginning at 8.

Red Cap Productions, a Bowling Green-based production company working on the upcoming zombie drama web series “Remnant 13,” which is shooting locally, is partnering with the Humane Society for the event.

Shawn Lindsey, producer of Remnant 13, said the event, which Red Cap conceived and organized, has never taken place before.

“We were wanting to do sort of a public event for a local place,” he said.

Runners in the 5K will be sent out in waves every 20 minutes.

Each runner wears three flags, similar to the ones worn in flag football, and runs through the course avoiding zombies, who will wander around the course trying to take the flags, Lindsey said.

“If they get through the course with at least one flag, they will be considered survivors,” he said.

It costs $25 to register as a runner, though that cost will be reduced for anyone not wanting a complimentary T-shirt and for each member of a registered group of four or more, Lindsey said. Registering as a zombie is free.

“We need more,” Lindsey said. “The more we get, the better.”

Runners will also deal with obstacles they need to crawl under or climb over and a section where they must shoot a zombie with a Nerf gun before they can continue, he said.

The cast and crew of “Remnant 13,” which includes Ken Whitman, who has appeared on AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” will also be on hand for meet-and-greets, Lindsey said.

The event will also feature a zombie costume contest and awards for the runner with the best time and the zombie who gets the most flags, as well as raffles and giveaways.
