Another Bowling Green couple fell victim to one of the numerous “you have won” scams.
The couple received a check Feb. 12 for $2,900 from Halifax, Canada, saying they had won a foreign lottery.
They were directed to deposit the check, which they did, and wire the money back in exchange for $125,000. The Bowling Green couple wired the money and then found out the check was forged. The bank is holding them responsible for the $2,900, according to a Bowling Green Police Department report filed late last month.
Bowling Green police and other area law enforcement officers continue to warn the public about such scams. If it’s too good to be true, it is. They also caution that it is illegal to play foreign lotteries in the United States.
Theft – A refrigerator in the carport of a home in the 1900 block of Kay Avenue was rifled Feb. 29.
According to a city police report, beer and food totaling more than $250 were taken from the refrigerator. Jumper cables and a battery charger, together valued at $155, also were taken from the carport.
Theft – Two catalytic converters, valued at $320, were sawed off delivery vehicles parked at and belonging to Bodyman’s Repair, 1369 Old Louisville Road, on Feb. 27, according to a city police report.
Theft – A Bowling Green man reported that $3,000 was taken from his briefcase Monday, likely while he was at work at Computer LAN, 1022 U.S. 31-W Bypass, according to a city police report. The man said few people had access to the briefcase and gave police their names.
Theft – A Bowling Green woman told city police Tuesday her daughter had stolen her checks and had passed at least one forged check for nearly $320 Feb. 16 at Dollar General Market, 180 River Place Ave. Police have not located the woman’s daughter.
Theft – A trailer loaded with 456 bales of straw, together valued at $4,800, was taken Wednesday from a construction site in the 2700 block of Nashville Road, according to a city police report. The trailer was a 48-foot Lufkin, 1990 model, with Kentucky plate T70064.
