Glasgow High School ranks among top 10 Kentucky high schools
Glasgow High School ranks among the top 10 high schools in Kentucky, according to rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.
“It’s a huge accolade for our entire district,” GHS Principal Amy Allen said.
The school ranked ninth in the state, just behind Louisville Male High School but above Beechwood High School in Kenton County.
Allen credited the school’s students and staff, who work tirelessly to reach their potential.
“We really focus on that growth mindset and identifying how we can get them to the next level,” she said.
The rankings were part of U.S. News’ 2019 Best High Schools. A news release said this year’s rankings are an expanded edition, ranking more than 17,000 schools nationwide, up from 2,700 schools last year.
The news release said schools are evaluated on college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate. College readiness, for example, measures participation and performance in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.
According to data collected by U.S. News, 59 percent of students take at least one AP exam at Glasgow High School, and another 60 percent pass at least one AP exam.
The school’s graduation rate is 96 percent, with a mathematics proficiency of 64 percent and a reading proficiency of 61 percent. Minority enrollment at the school reaches 28 percent, and 53 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Allen said the school has made reading and math proficiency a priority by working with the district’s middle school to align instruction.
“It’s really about growing our students,” she said.
