Hot Rods’ McKay will be promoted to High-A Port Charlotte

Bowling Green Hot Rods pitcher/first baseman Brendan McKay will be promoted to High-A Port Charlotte on Monday, the Hot Rods announced Saturday.

McKay, a former University of Louisville standout two-way player, was the No. 4 overall selection in the 2017 Major League Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

In his brief time with Bowling Green, the Rays’ third overall prospect made an impact on both sides of the plate. On the mound, McKay was 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA. He pitched 24 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs (all earned), walked two and struck out a whopping 40 batters.

In his last outing Thursday at Bowling Green Ballpark, the left-hander tossed a career-high six innings to earn his second win of the season in a 4-0 win over Cedar Rapids (Iowa). McKay allowed just one hit and struck out seven in the win.

At the plate, McKay batted .254, with 16 hits, 16 RBIs, 28 walks, one home run and had an on-base percentage of .484 for the Hot Rods. He currently leads the Midwest League in on-base percentage.
