In theaters this week
Can’t decide what to see this weekend?
Bowling Green Daily News film critic Micheal Compton is here to tell you the best – and worst – now playing at your local cineplex.
Alice Through the Looking Glass (D)
A lackluster sequel that I’m pretty sure no one was clamoring for, with even the visual effects mundane. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
The Angry Birds Movie (C-)
That annoying game you can play on your phone proves to be an annoying animated film, wasting the chance to put to good use a very talented cast that includes Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, and Danny McBride. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Barbershop: The Next Cut (B-)
Some moments of genuine insight and a few nice comedic sets make this latest installment of the Ice Cube series a pleasant surprise. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Captain America: Civil War (B)
This may not be quite up to the same level as the previous “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but it is still a satisfying entry into a universe that continues to expand. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
God’s Not Dead 2 (D+)
Some interesting ideas are undone by a heavy-handed production that feels more like a TV movie than a feature film. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
The Huntsman: Winters War (D+)
The follow-up to the 2012 hit that is about as lackluster as a film can be despite a cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, and Charlize Theron. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
The Jungle Book (A-)
The newest version of the Rudyard Kipling novel – a live action remake from director Jon Favreau – manages to hit all the high points from the novel and the Disney animated film, but also provides a spin that makes the story its own. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
Me Before You (C)
Despite Emilia Clarke’s endearing performance as an eternally optimistic young woman who takes a job caring for a paralyzed man (Sam Clafin), the film ultimately falls apart by becoming just another predictable tear-jerker romance. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Highland Cinemas)
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (C)
This follow-up to the 2014 hit (featuring Seth Rogan, Rose Byrne, and Zac Efron) feels like more like reheated leftovers than a film that expands on the success of the original.(Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
The Nice Guys (B)
This could have easily been called “The Fun Guys,” a light-hearted throwback from co-writer and director Shane Black (who penned the “Lethal Weapon” movies) that provides softer fare for leads Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (C+)
This mocumentary from the Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer) does have moments of inspired genius, it struggles to maintain any consistent momentum putting it clearly behind similar films “This Is Spinal Tap” and “CB4.” (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (Not reviewed at this time)
(Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas, Franklin Drive-In)
X-Men Apocalypse (C)
The latest in the Marvel franchise that is overstuffed and a bit of a mess, taking the franchise a step or two back from previous entries. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas, Franklin Drive-In)
Zootopia (A-)
A wonder for all ages that is filled with detail, from the look to the story, bringing this fully realized animal world to life. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
