Kentucky Poet Laureate Gurney Norman to read at WKU
Kentucky Poet Laureate Gurney Norman will hold a reading at 7 p.m. March 25 at Western Kentucky University.
The reading, which is free and open to the public, will be in Cherry Hall 125. It is sponsored by the Creative Writing Committee of the English Department.
Norman was appointed poet laureate for 2009-2010 by Gov. Steve Beshear. As poet laureate, Norman promotes the arts and leads the state in literary endeavors, including Kentucky Writer’s Day. That is celebrated April 24 to honor the birth date of Kentucky author and poet Robert Penn Warren, the nation’s first poet laureate.
Norman is director of creative writing at the University of Kentucky. In addition to his writing, editing and teaching, he carries on an active service role in Kentucky and surrounding states as an advisor to community-based arts groups.
