PRP wins sixth state baseball championship

Pleasure Ridge Park held off a late Simon Kenton rally to win its sixth state baseball championship, 6-5, in the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament title game at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington on Saturday.

Simon Kenton fought out of a 6-2 deficit to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

PRP (40-5) is tied with DuPont Manual and Owensboro for the second-most state titles and is just one short of state leader St. Xavier (seven).

Noah McDonald led PRP with two RBIs in the second inning and scored on an error as part of a four-run frame. PRP built a 6-2 lead by the fourth inning before Simon Kenton (27-16) rallied in the seventh.

Kyle Taylor and Trent Kincaid led off with back-to-back doubles, then Kincaid scored on a groundout from Brayden Trattles. Zane Fuqua’s RBI single scored Trattles, but Joey Ponder grounded out to third to end the game.

The Panthers won all but one game in the tournament by just one run, including their opening-round 4-3 victory over Franklin-Simpson on June 9.

PRP’s Nick Rucker was named the state tournament MVP. Others who made the All-Tournament Team were PRP’s McDonald and Garrett Schmeltz; Simon Kenton’s Kincaid, Bailey Martin and Mitchell Kreidenweis; McCracken County’s James Michael Dodd and Luke Seed; Marion County’s Andrew Spalding and Luke Thomas; Highlands’ Ethan Doty, Scott County’s Cooper Robb, Knox Central’s Seth Hill and Muhlenberg County’s Brennan Myers.
