State beekeeper seeking input on plan to save bees, other pollinators
The State Beekeeper is coming to Bowling Green to ask public opinion on the state’s plan to reduce the loss of bees and other plant pollinators in Kentucky.
State beekeeper Tammy Horn Potter will be at the Warren County Cooperative Extension Office on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. to explain the Pollinator Protection Plan, a Kentucky Department of Agriculture press release said.
This is the second Pollinator Protection Plan forum, according to the release, which said the first was held in Frankfort on Feb. 24.
“This forum is not simply a repeat of the first one,” Potter said in the release.“After reviewing the current draft of the plan, we will provide updates to success metrics and solicit public input. We are considering assessments and want to consider the public’s ideas for how this plan can be executed successfully.”
According to the plan’s introduction, more than 90 crops in the U.S. count on pollinators like honey bees to reproduce and beekeepers nationwide have been reporting colony losses over the past decade.
The plan, which can be found on the KDA’s website at https://www.kyagr.com/statevet/documents/OSV_Bee_KY-Pollinator-Pro-Plan-2016.pdf includes measures to reduce pollinators’ exposure to pesticides, increased planting of pollinator habitats and more education and outreach on the issue.
