Claycomb earns scoring record at PING Invitational
Bowling Green native Canon Claycomb shot a tournament record 9-under-par 207 to win the PING Invitational on Monday at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
The 15-year-old Claycomb won his first American Junior Golf Association event by a 10-stroke margin in the three-round tournament.
Claycomb made a 15-foot eagle putt on No. 18 to set the new boys’ division record previously held by Masters, U.S. Open and British Open champion Jordan Spieth in 2008.
He shot a first-round 69 (-3), second-round 67 (-5) and third-round 71 (-1).
WKU’s CAVANAUGH HONORED BY C-USA
Western Kentucky volleyball’s Alyssa Cavanaugh was named Monday as Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. The outside hitter has now collected a pair of offensive honors during her senior season and five in her career.
Cavanaugh led the Lady Topper squad to its Conference USA-record 30th straight win over a league opponent – including regular-season and tournament play – with 24 kills in Friday night’s sweep of Southern Miss.
Her 24 kills in three sets tied for the fourth-most by a player in a three-set match across the nation this season. Cavanaugh worked at a .476 hitting clip with 42 swings on the night while also adding a pair of aces from behind the service line to bring her total to 26 points on the match.
Cavanaugh moved into third place on WKU’s all-time kills leaderboard with 1,616 strikes to date. The Louisville native has the sixth slot on the program’s all-time attacks list, currently owning 3,607.
WKU has won 48 consecutive home matches against conference opponents dating back to 2011 during the squad’s time in the Sun Belt Conference.
Cavanaugh’s accolade brings WKU’s 2017 total to 11 honors in seven weeks of distribution.
