Hilltopper roster undergoes preseason shakeup

Rick Stansbury’s first Western Kentucky men’s basketball roster is shaping up a month before practice starts in early October for the 2016-17 season.

WKU on Tuesday announced the addition of Hartford grad transfer Cleveland “Pancake” Thomas. The school also revealed in the release announcing Thomas’ arrival that freshman Marko Stajkovski has joined the program.

On the other hand, Phabian Glasco and Nathan Smith are still enrolled at WKU but are “medically exempt from participating” with the Topper program and won’t count against the Toppers’ scholarship limits, team spokesman Zach Greenwell said.

Glasco and Smith both suffered season-ending injuries during WKU’s 2015-16 campaign.

Walk-on guards Keifer Dalton and Dylan Sanford are also no longer with the program, Greenwell confirmed.

The roster moves leave the Hilltoppers with five players remaining from last year’s team that was coached by Ray Harper: Willie Carmichael, Justin Johnson, Ben Lawson, Jabari McGhee and Anton Waters.

Of those five, only the seniors Lawson and Waters and the junior Johnson – all forwards – saw playing time for WKU last season. The redshirt sophomore forwards Carmichael and McGhee both sat out the season after transferring from Tennessee.

Grad transfer guards Que Johnson and Junior Lomomba joined the program this summer after leaving Washington State and Providence, respectively. So too did freshman guards Tobias “T.J” Howard, Marty Leahy, Damari Parris and Stajkovski, whose signing was unannounced by the program.

Buffalo junior guard Lamonte Bearden transferred to WKU late this summer. He’ll have to sit out the 2016-17 season before playing in 2017-18.

The former Hartford guard Thomas completed the roster with his transfer, which was first reported Sunday by CBS Sports. Like Que Johnson and Lomomba, Thomas is a senior who’ll be eligible to play right away.

Thomas, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound Baton Rouge, La., native, brings years of experience to the Hilltoppers’ backcourt for his final season.

Thomas was named a Second Team All-America East selection last season after averaging 18.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists for Hartford – all team highs. He also led the program with 36 steals and was the only player in the America East to finish in the league’s top 10 in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

As one of the country’s top 60 scorers, Thomas scored at least 35 points four times last season, including a career-high 38 points at New Hampshire. He hit at least four 3-pointers 11 times while at Hartford and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds twice.

Thomas shot 42.6 percent from 3-point range (ranking 27th in the nation) with 81 makes in 2015-16 – including a career-high eight 3s against Vermont – as well as an 82.7 percent clip from the free-throw line. His 566 points were the eighth-most in a season in Hartford history.

Thomas led the conference with 34.6 minutes per contest last season. He played 194 of the team’s 200 minutes over its final five games.

Thomas sat out the 2014-15 campaign at Hartford after transferring from New Mexico. He was named to the America East Academic Honor Roll during his season sitting out.

Thomas appeared in 67 games across his first two seasons with New Mexico and made 10 starts as a sophomore. The Lobos reached the NCAA Tournament in both of his seasons with the program.

Prior to college, Thomas was a four-year starter for Scotlandville Magnet School in Baton Rouge. He averaged 20.1 points as a senior in helping the Hornets win the Louisiana state title with a 36-2 record, and his squad finished as the state runner-up the year before as he averaged 17.5 points as a junior.

Stajkovski is a 6-7 native of Novi Sad, Serbia. He competed as an amateur for Szolnoki Olaj, a club team in Hungary, while attending E-Gimnazija Novi Sad school in his hometown.

Stajkovski averaged 19.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for Szolnoki Olaj in 2014-15. He shot 56 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range in helping his squad win the Hungarian National Championship.

Before playing in Hungary, Stajkovski competed for the Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) Junior team in Belgrade, Serbia, where his squad won the Euroleague Basketball International Junior Tournament.

Glasco joined in 2015-16 after transferring from Connors State (Okla.) College. The 6-7, 230-pound forward from Tulsa, Okla., ruptured an Achilles tendon in August of 2015 and had to miss the entire 2015-16 season.

Glasco, who was a junior when he enrolled at WKU last year, still has two years of college eligibility left.

Smith also joined the program in 2015-16. He averaged 1.3 points over three games.

The 7-2, 240-pound center from London, England tore an ACL in December and had to miss the rest of the year. Smith received a medical hardship waiver and will have four years of eligibility left.

Dalton and Sanford spent one season at WKU after careers at Clinton County High School and Owensboro HS, respectively.

The 5-11, 165-pound Albany native Dalton played in four games last season and scored 0.3 points per game.

The 6-1, 180-pound Owensboro native Sanford appeared in five contests and averaged 0.8 ppg.
