Man killed in deputy-involved shooting
A Bowling Green man was shot and killed Sunday in Morgantown by a Butler County sheriff’s deputy after the deputy was reportedly dragged by an SUV during a traffic stop.
According to Kentucky State Police, Deputy Chris Reneer of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office stopped a 2010 Ford Explorer on Logansport Road near Dave Gaskey Lane about 2:13 a.m. Sunday on the suspicion that occupants in the vehicle had outstanding warrants.
During the process of attempting to identify a passenger, the person, identified by KSP as Randy J. Clark Jr., 43, of Bowling Green, became combative and got involved in a physical altercation with Reneer, who deployed a stun gun.
Clark continued to be combative and gained access to the driver’s side of the Explorer and accelerated, resulting in Reneer being dragged by the vehicle, according to KSP.
Reneer fired multiple shots from his agency-issued handgun, striking Clark multiple times. The Explorer came to a stop after striking a guardrail at Logansport Road and Dave Gaskey Lane, enabling Reneer to free himself.
Police later learned that Clark was wanted on outstanding warrants in Warren County and by Kentucky Probation and Parole.
Reneer was transported by Butler County EMS to The Medical Center in Bowling Green for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.
He was released from the hospital later that day, KSP Trooper B.J. Eaton, spokesman for Post 3 in Bowling Green, said Monday morning.
The incident remains under investigation by the KSP, Eaton said.
