Class of ’18 safety Occuir commits to WKU
Western Kentucky picked up a Class of 2018 football commitment Monday courtesy of safety Malik Occuir.
Occuir is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect from Northeast High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He’s rated a three-star prospect by 247 Sports.
Occuir also had offers from Appalachian State, Idaho and Kentucky. He committed to Florida Atlantic under former coach Charlie Partridge’s coaching staff, but decommitted after new Owls coach Lane Kiffin’s staff arrived.
“I opened my eyes and realized there’s a school that’s 100 percent for me,” Occuir told the Daily News on Tuesday of WKU. “I wanted to commit right away.”
Occuir’s main recruiter was Hilltopper offensive line coach Geoff Dartt.
“He’s a straightforward guy,” Occuir said of Dartt. “He tells the truth and makes sure you understand things.”
Occuir, who also plays linebacker for Northeast HS, said playing the run is his biggest strength, but that he’s also trying to improve his pass coverage.
Occuir is WKU’s seventh Class of 2018 commit. He’s the second defensive back of the group, joining Georgia cornerback Jayden Patterson.
Occuir is the third Floridian to join the Hilltopper class, joining fellow Fort Lauderdale natives Maurquel Dillard and Troy Ingle.
